Quadrophenia (Remix / Remaster) - The Who

Hearing this in such amazing clarity was just a revelation. Up to that point, I'd been using my dad's incredibly well-played Track original and a dub of a UK Track cassette. Chalk and cheese and became a gateway for me. I was struggling at University (in Brighton oddly enough) at the time and would spend hours on the beach listening to it on a clumsy portable CD Walkman.

Wilco's Being There comes up a lot, and I totally agree, as with REM's New Adventures and Weezer's Pinkerton

Also: The Cranberries "To the Faithful Departed", Stereolab "Emperor Tomato Ketchup"

  18. Another Top 10 of 1996 I forgot. My favorite Bill Frisell, too.

Great year in my music collection, many favorites still, the brilliant one in my long time avatar from OTC, my favorite Stereolab album, three (!) great records from Brian Jonestown Massacre, one of my favorite Sixteen Horsepower records, Steve Earle, Spoon's cool debut on Matador, the second amazing record from Tricky (and Martina), Wilco making the transition to a big-time band, Richard Davies best solo record, Bowery Electric with one of the definitive electro-dub-trip-hop records of the 90s, Gastr del Sol, Cul De Sac, DJ Shadow, Cibo Matto, brilliant modern krautrock from Kreidler, Silver Jews hitting their stride on the road to greatness, Rachel's with two stunning neo-classical releases, Failure, Girls Against Boys, Belle and Sebastian, the Auteurs recording their statement record with Steve Albini, Bardo Pond, the great debut from American Analog Set, Mazzy Star, Veda Hille (below), Screaming Trees, Jon Spencer, just goes on and on. 1995 and 1997 are better for me, but 1996 is still a pretty amazing year ...
