Love that song, one of my favorite three or four from the album. I always prefer getting as many of the 'bonus' cuts as possible on the cd.

It says a lot for an artist when there is little consensus for favorites like in this case.

Just in case the existence of this thread comes to Mr Knopfler's attention, can I just add that I'd be confident of a new favorite for the list if he could make contact with Kate Rusby and do an album together.

I'd see it as a Robert Plant/Alison Krauss type collaboration for this decade.

On topic, my favorite songs of his include-

    Sultans Of Swing
    Six Blade Knife
    Private Investigations
    Lady Writer
    Your Latest Trick
    You And Your Friend
    On Every Street
    Punish The Monkey
    Done With Bonaparte
    Je Suis Désolé
    Secondary Waltz

Another of my concert highlights was when Mark revived "On Every Street" for the set in 2015.

It's coming up on the tenth anniversary of Kill To Get Crimson, another great late-summer album. I love relaxing on the patio listening to this; just had "Secondary Waltz" playing yesterday!

Love Over Gold. Top to bottom just a fantastic album from a catalog of fantastic albums.

I love hearing Knopfler's guitar work. I know it's one of "the hits" but he makes his solos and fills in "Sultans of Swing" sound easy.

Was listening to and loving All the Road Running the other night.

Have many of the above-mentioned albums, and also the Neck and Neck with Chet Atkins.

The DS debut is the best thing he ever did, I think. Lots of good stuff sprinkled throughout his career, but everything about that first album is perfect.

I seem to have stepped off the bus after Rag Picker's Dream. No idea how so many albums could have passed me by. I've got some serious catching up to do.

I reckon most of M.K.'s work is consistently strong with even lesser material scoring a "good"

As to favourites, I reckon Making Movies just about shades it as far as Dire Straits is concerned. I know it's his Springsteen moment but the songs are just glorious (even Les Boys!). Sailing To Philadelphia is top of the pile solo-wise but they're all worth owning (which is why I'm so annoyed for missing so many recent ones!)

Individual tracks? Private Investigations and Why Aye Man.

Just seen him live once, with the Notting Hillbillies. An excellent, laid back show. Interestingly, I've got to know his Hillbillies band mate, Brendan Croker because he plays occasionally at a session that I also attend. Nice chap.

+1 for Nothing Hillbillies, its also a very impressive vinyl recording. Recently reissued too but the original sounds great and can be found for cheap.

I have always just found the sound of his guitar playing to be one of the great sounds in rock, but alas it hasn't been connected with songs I value for too much of his career. (Like, post-LOVE OVER GOLD.)

Two Knopfler albums are SO far above the rest for me:

    Making Movies
    Love Over Gold

Third place is not anywhere close to those heights...

I'm surprised All the Roadrunning has got so few votes - in my opinion this is one of his strongest, if not the strongest, post Dire Straits release
