Someone put the lyrics to a Youtube-clip I once shared of Knopfler's "That's the way it always starts" in it occurred to me (as the last one in this forum perhaps) that Knopfler has a great talent to place himself alone in a room in a nightly city environment.... it's there in the aforementioned song:
It's there in "Your Latest Trick":
He's in a strange place in "On Every Street"
Which isn't far away from the atmosphere in "Private Investigations"
Is Mark Knopfler really a detective novelist?!?

Brothers In Arms is a very solid album, and "Walk of Life" flashes me back to a very good time in my life and gives me an uplift every time I hear it. I also have a special fondness for Neck and Neck, the album he did with the legendary Chet Atkins.

Sailing to Philadelphia and Ragpicker's Dream by far.
If people can recommend Knopfler cd's that sound like these two, I'd welcome them.
Don't care too much for the ones he did with Emmylou Harris and Chet Atkins, and Get Lucky. Too folky and country rootsy.
Can't wait to see him do a bit more jazz-flavored record.

Btw, has anyone noticed what a sweet gem of a song 'A Place Where We Used To Live' is? My favorite Knopfler song (on Ragpicker's Dream).

It didn't do anything in the marketplace, but I always had a special place for "In Our Shangri-La" on that album that had the slot machine on the cover.

I think Mark's albub with Emmylou Harris, All The Roadrunning, is similar stylistically to those two albums. IIRC the sessions for All The Roadrunning overlapped with the sessions for those two albums.

  11. I received his latest album, Down the Road Forever, for Christmas and am really enjoying it. I’ve only had a chance to play it twice but, to me, it has a little more Dire Straits DNA than some of his other recent albums.

I think 'Neck And Neck' with Chet Atkins should be on the list since the Emmylou Harris collaboration is included. Arguably his film scores too ('Local Hero' is possibly as well known as any MK rack).

Very difficult to pick favorites. One DS and one solo for me but could change on any given day.

    Making Movies
    Sailing to Philadelphia

Some favorite songs, limited to one from any album. Really too many to list.
    Sultans
Once Upon a Time in the West
    Tunnel of Love
    Brothers in Arms
    Telegraph Road
    Going Home
    Silver town Blues
    So Far From the Clyde
    Song for Sonny Liston

I’ve saw DS once in 1985. Mark Knophler 4or 5 times. One of my all time favorite artists and will see him any chance I get. Hear he’s coming back to Wolftrap this summer.

  17. If you click on your name at the top right side of the page, you’ll get a drop down menu that has “avatar” as an option. I don’t remember the details but it can’t be too hard or I wouldn’t have bothered lol!

“Go, Love”, off of Privateering, is to me absolutely stunning. It is one of the few songs by any artist that really puts me inside the song.
