Hi all, new here. I've enjoyed reading through a lot of the posts here the past week and have learned quite a bit. I just picked up my first two gold discs, A Night at the Opera (DCC) & News of the World (MFSL). Now I have a question for all of you.

My 30th birthday is coming up at the end of the month. I thought that since friends are always bugging me asking what I'd like it would be the perfect opportunity to expand my CD collection. What I'm looking for is your top albums. Any category, I like most if not all genres. From Norah Jones to Iced Earth, Art Blakey to Saliva, The Beatles to Anthrax, Sinatra to Opeth, Miles Davis to Queen, Men at Work to Mozart. I'm open to pretty much anything.

Now the hard part. No OOP stuff, no hard to find stuff. Just stuff you'd find at Best Buy, Circuit City or a decently stocked music shop. In other words discs most people could go out and buy without much trouble. My collection is pretty small, a couple hundred, so chances are good I won't have most of what gets mentioned.

No SACD or DVD-A yet. Still looking at players for those.

So finally my question to you all. What are some of your must have CD's?

I'm going to post this same question in the music section at one of my favorite haunts, the Home Theatre Forum. It will be interesting to see all of your recommendations.

    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

    Hi--welcome!
I recommend that you visit www.hmv.com or www.absound.com and order Steve's supreme mastering of "Who's Next" by The Who. Make sure you order disc number MCABD37217. You can get it for under $10.00 in American currency. It's from the true master tape and no other version out there sounds as good as Steve's.

  9. Ed Bishop

Ed Bishop Incredibly, I'm still here

Yes, and the Zombies comp as well....new stuff, huh? Most of my faves in my collection seem to be OOP....a lot of gold discs, some obscure overseas comps that seem to go in and out of print overnight, things like that....you could check out the Stones SACD threads and pick a handful of those, the best are worthwhile, and if you only choose one go with BEGGARS BANQUET....

You know, guys, it would probably be easier to list for our new member what discs to avoid, rather than which ones to buy. Nah, that list would be just as long....

I agree. Get this one before it goes out of print. It's mighty cheap, too! Pick up the Who's "Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy" while your at it. Another nice Steve remastering (actually, I think all of this was transferred flat from the original British masters) that's out of print here in the US but still available in Canada. Both are a snap to order on line and your total will be less than $20...nice!

Hmm....anything?! Well... (excuse me if you have many of these albums!)

    The Who-Quadrophenia
    The Beach Boys-Pet Sounds
Peter Gabriel-self-titled 3rd album (with melting face cover)
    Genesis-Selling England By The Pound
    CCR-Cosmo's Factory (Steve's of course!)
    Rush-Moving Pictures
The Police-Message In A Box (hey, I know the SACD's are coming out, but this is a great box!)
    R.E.M.-Document
    Blondie-Parallel Lines
    Talking Heads-Stop Making Sense

That's all of these I can think of now. I'm pretty sure you have some of those, but at least try to listen to the ones I've listed you don't have. If you would like to see reviews of some of the listed albums above go to:

    http://starling.rinet.ru/music/index.htm

There is also a giant listing of most of the bands he lists of their best album, revolutionary album, worst album, underrated album, live album, and for you, the album (that he says) is the best album to start.

http://starling.rinet.ru/music/zap.htm (Be warned, it is a very heavy full-of-album-covers page!)

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Keep them coming. I'm making a list that should keep me going for a while.

I'll be sure and pick up those Who discs from Canada today.

Bought myself an early present today since Best Buy has their preferred customer weekend & Circuit City is having an all single CD's $14.99 and less are $11.99 or less sale. Here's what I got...

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble - Texas Flood
Lord of the Rings The Two Towers Soundtrack
Frank Sinatra - Only the Lonely
    Jethro Tull - Aqualung
    Neil Young - Harvest Moon
    Van Morrison - Moondance
    Beatles - Sgt. Pepper
    Beatles - Abbey Road
    Beatles - Rubber Soul
Elton John - Greatest Hits 1970-2002

I edited my earlier post a bit, because some of the choices wern't really great ones. (I also fixed the web link, if you care)

You did good shopping! All of those titles are great.

I'm surprised at the lack of some titles here! Here are few great ones that haven't been mentioned:

King Crimson-In The Court of The Crimson King
    U2-The Joshua Tree
    The Beatles-Magical Mystery Tour
    Black Sabbath-Paranoid
and no CD collection can be complete without Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Wall!

Boxed sets also give a great overview on an artist:

The Beach Boys-Good Vibrations 5-disc set
    Bob Dylan-Biograph
Janis Joplin-Box of Pearls (all of her studio albums)
    Led Zeppelin-The Complete Studio Recordings
    The Doors-Complete Studio Recordings
The Beatles-EP or Singles collection (when you have all the albums from the Beatles!)

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head right now! It's kind of hard to do this you know...

Cant go wrong with Stevie Ray Vaughan. Try The Sky Is Crying, Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughan, and any Stevie Ray Vaughan dvd, because he is as much fun to watch as he is to listen to.

Beatles- Revolver. The Beatles at peak form. They released this top album, and their next album, Pepper, was every bit as good, and it had a different sound. MMT was almost as good as Pepper, but more of the same. It's clear the Beatles peaked with Revolver on my mind. Of course peaked is a relative term when With The Beatles is your worst album, and Revolver is your best. That's like trying to tell the difference between 190 mph and 200 mph.

Lennon- Uh, I may be biase here, but Mind Games is great, Plastic Ono Band is another good one, along with Imagine, and Double Fantasy (well, half of it anyway. I made it through 30 seconds of one Yoko song). Milk and Honey is great too, even if it is a bunch of demos, it is still Lennon. If you are a huge fan, pick up the John Lennon Anthology. I love this 4 cd box, and the satires are great.

Harrison- All Things Must Pass. A little preachy, but good.

Norah Jones. The only cd she has out is great, as most people know.

Eric Clapton- From The Cradle. If you only buy one cd after Revolver, buy this one. Great all the way around, not typical 70's Clapton that most people think of.

Pink Floyd. Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You were here. Two great albums with Dave Gilmour in top form.

Phish. Round Room and Slip Stitch and Pass. Try either of these for some fun up tempo music with a good beat.

Ben Harper. The one with always got to steal my kisses from you on it.

Fleetwood Mac. Then Play On. Classic Peter Green Fleetwood Mac blues.

Indigenous. Things We Do. Try this one, I think you wll like it.

Wilson Pickett. I have the greatest hits, but you could probably just pick one.

Parliament's Greatest hits. Do I really have to say anything?

Ben Folds Five. Reinhold Messner. This is a talented guy.

Tom Petty. Wildflowers. Great Petty album from about 10 years ago.

Santana Live at The Fillmore '68. Good live jams.

Joe Satriani. The Extremist. Another good one, great sound.

John Coltrane. Giant Steps. It's freakin Coltrane.

Miles Davis. Any. DCC Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet, Kind Of Blue, Bitches Brew, Jack Johnson (bit more complicated, maybe you should pick this one up if you really like the later Miles Davis stuff). Friday and Saturday night at the Blackhawk are set for rerelease in March, so mark that on the calendar. Live At Carnegie Hall.

Alanis Morrisette. I am sure I will catch some crap for this, but I really like that first album she put out here. It has some great songs, and the whole album is good. I remember buying this album in August of '95, you couldnt go anywhere without hearing songs from this album. She's a Canadian too ay?

Counting Crows. August and Everything After. Pretty good album, although I havent kept up with this album.

Bob Dylan. Quite a few of his albums are gettin g ready to come out on sacd, so you may want to hold off. Blonde on Blonde. Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 revisited.

That about sums it up. Let me know if you need anymore suggestions, I have plenty.

But among the recommendations I recommend the highest I include Gordon Lightfoot's 60s-70s recordings, John Denver's RCA recordings, The Mason Williams Phonograph Record (don't assume that Classical Gas is the only decent cut on the album, lots and lots of 20s-70s country music plus the Urban Cowboy soundtrack although I do listen to lots of current country, but you'd probably prefer the great classics, an Andrews Sisters compilation, Ssgt. Barry Sadler-Ballads of The Green Berets, etc.
