Ay-yi-yi! Have to go with LET IT BE for that honor. By a mile. (Not counting YELLOW SUBMARINE with the soundtrack music or the later comps and outtakes.)

WITH THE BEATLES would be on my "One-Hundred Essential Rock and Roll CDs," whenever I got around to writing it out.

Everybody keeps mentioning the Floyd albums from Dark Side through The Wall. Why has nobody mentioned...

Piper at the Gates of Dawn?? The Roger Waters led Floyd was damn good, yes, but will never be anywhere near as superb as it was with Syd at the helm.

In addition to Piper, here're some more suggestions (if you don't have 'em already):

Elvis Costello & The Attractions - This Year's Model

AC/DC - Back in Black (For as much as I like the Bon Scott era AC/DC, the little ol' band from Australia doesn't come much better than this album here)

Electric Light Orchestra - Strange Magic: The Best of E.L.O. (The only thing that could make this set any better is if it had "Fire on High")

Rhino's Poptopia! Power Pop Classics of the '70's

Rolling Stones - Exile on Main. St

Chicago - Group Portrait (4-CD Box Set - Get the Columbia version w/ the liner notes if you can, as the Chicago Records reissue doesn't contain this)

Paul Simon - Shining Like a National Guitar: Greatest Hits (From what I understand, this is a Canadian only release, although I've seen it listed as an "Import" in national chain stores ( ) around the Seattle area. You can't go wrong with this disc-the sequencing and mastering are perfect)

    The Move - Hits & Rarities: Singles A's & B's (a 2CD German import on Repertoire)

The Moody Blues - On the Threshold of a Dream

Many of my faves are long out of print, but these are some of the more mainstream albums that I never seem to tire of.

    Vangelis - Soil Festivities/Mythodea/Bladerunner OST
    Klaus Schulze - Mirage/X/Body Love Vol. 2
    U2 - Zooropa
    Cerrone - Love In C Minor/Cerrone's Paradise
    Tangerine Dream - Tangram/Exit/Le Parc/Underwater Sunlight
    Roxy Music - Avalon
    Rush - Moving Pictures/Signals
    Depeche Mode - Violator
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon/The Wall
Supertramp - Crime Of The Century
    Tomita - Snowflakes Are Dancing
    Mahogany (OST)
Donna Summer - The Dance Collection
Alan Parsons Project - I, Robot/Tales Of Mystery And Imagination (note: currently available version is a remix; the original works much better IMO)
The Beatles - Sgt Peppers/Abbey Road
Tears For Fears - The Hurting/Elemental
Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret
Jean-Michel Jarre - Oxygene (the original, not the "parts 7 - 13" sequel)
    Pet Shop Boys - Very/Behaviour/Alternative
    Orbital - In Sides
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
Talk Talk - It's My Life
    Isaac Hayes - Joy
Yes - Close To The Edge
Aphex Twin - I Care Because You Do

Neil Young - After The Gold Rush
    Fleetwood Mac - S/T
    David Bowie - Heroes
Elvis Costello - This Year's Model

I used to say that I envied people that were able to follow the Kinks since the 60s and also people that did not know about them.

Congrats on dicovering MH. You'll find a lot of opiniuons of Kinks' best albums --which proves how good they are-- but I'd suggest one that is no frequently mentioned: Misfits. There's an MFSL issue, readily and cheaply available at ebay.

First, a ground rule. To avoid the vinyl/CD debate, I'm going to recommend titles available as CD only.
Second, I'm going to focus this so you don't go out with an impossibly long shopping list.
Third, although I'm not going down to Circuit City to check, I believe you should find these CD's just about anywhere.

    1. Beggars Banquet The Rolling Stones Yes, it's controversial whether they did as good a job as they could on it, but the redbook layer sounds pretty good to me and most important, it's now at the correct speed.

    2. Kind of Blue Miles Davis Also, never released in LP at the correct speed. Consistently voted one of the 'must have' jazz titles. It's bargain priced and has previously unreleased takes.

    3. Chuck Berry Rock and Roll Rarities Chess A Steve Hoffman project that's generally available. Classic Rock, great sound.

There you go, one CD for every ten years. If you ask me to recommend more I'll have trouble holding it under 50 discs.
