I can't fathom only coming up with five, but very pleased to see the likes of Lost in Translation and Koyaanisqatsi mentioned. I think the mark of a great film is one that you can watch again and again and still enjoy.

I don't know if I can choose just 5, consistently, without contradicting myself. One week, I would choose 5 and another week another 5 with at least one difference. LOL.

    But, I know one thing...

The Ten Commandments will always be on any list of 5 I make, along with Star Wars and, probably, Stargate.

Other contenders for the other two spots, in no particular order:

    Goodfellas
    Raiders Of The Lost Ark
The Lord Of The Rings (the entire trilogy)
    Dances With Wolves
The Wizard Of Oz (probably my 2nd most watched movie of all time, after The Ten Commandments)
Last Of The Mohicans (my favorite Daniel Day Lewis film)
    Platoon
The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

.... and countless others I can't think of off the top of my head.

My list is already growing too big and this is without listing any of my all-time favorite comedies that I would consider amongst my all-time favorite movies:

Stripes, Animal House, Bachelor Party, Blues Brothers, Revenge of The Nerds, Porky's, and a few others.

We all know Top Fives can change day by day (at least, that's my excuse)

    Miller's Crossing
    The Stuntman
    The Innocents
Once Upon a Time in America
    Ran (Kurosawa)

  5. Yeah, I went round and round with the definition given.

To me, "Top Movies" is similar to "Best Movies" and has to do with several factors other than just appealing to me. It would have been different if the title of the thread were "What are your favorite 5 movies of all time?".

Perhaps I read too much into it.....

I don't know if The Lego Movie is one of the five best films of all time, but it certainly should have been nominated for an Oscar.

I agree, The LEGO Movie is a very awesome movie. The only thing I didn't like about the movie is that it wasn't entirely made of real LEGO bricks and most of it was CGI.

  16. My favorite English language films. Don't even get me started on foreign films...

    1. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas/ HEAD/ The Fellowship of the Ring
    2. The Apartment
    3. Heathers/Beetlejuice
    4. Natural Born Killers (director's cut)/True Romance
    5. Appaloosa (2008)/The Wild Bunch (original)/High Noon (original)

Only 5? Annie Hall, One Flew Over.., too many classics... Miller's Crossing (reading this thread reminds of so many greats). Anyone mention Being There?

My Top 5 are ones that are perfect to me and "speak to me" in that special movie magic way.
