I know we've talked about this here before but I asked this question on another forum today and I'm curious about what your current thoughts are on this:

I'm sincerely curious as to what bands or artist any of you believe will be as well remembered/recognized/revered in 45 years as (for example) Elvis, The Beach Boys, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones are today?

I'll be pushing 90. I'll be lucky if I remember anything.

I think the answer has to be that none will achieve that level due to the fact that pop culture is now much more diverse and stratified. No one in recent times can have the same percentage of mind share that those artists got, no matter how talented.

Though some people will probably still remember the huge pop artists of today (Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, etc.), what will really be remembered are those who are still pushing boundaries even in the days when so many boundaries have already been pushed. Those people will be Frank Ocean, Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, etc.

    I agree with this.

And I'll add those artists who have created consistent masterworks over the course of their career. D'Angelo or maybe Erykah Badu for example.

Magnolia Electric Co... and of course Nina Nastasia, though technically she was recording the amazing Dogs in 1999, but only a few lucky souls heard it before 2000.

I'll check out a few of these that I'm not very familiar with. So far, nothing jumps out at me but I hope some of these artists prove to have staying power.

Maybe White Stripes/Jack White? Technically started in late 90's but close enough. Seems like a strong possibility.

    Arcade Fire
    Beyoncé
    Daft Punk
    Eminem
    Jay-Z
    Kendrick Lamar
    Taylor Swift
    Kanye West
    Jack White/White Stripes

Some of these artists may have some output prior to 2000, but their most impactful work dominated and helped shape this century's pop music landscape. That would be similar to writing off Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath because their earliest work was released in the late 1960's. They clearly dominated and helped shape popular music in the 1970's and are generally not perceived as classic '60's artists.
    These names subject to change.

of course, music can only be good if it has mass appeal, and thus be "hugely remembered" in fifty years.

Coldplay is pretty borderline here but I think they could be there for the long haul. All I've really realised is that I don't really know many or any new bands/artists.

Hugely remembered? Maybe nobody. The rock is already dead (due to electronic music) and in 45 years only interested specialists or very rare people....Let's think about jazz. It was a very popular music but 45 years later what are your musicians very remembered? That already belongs to a very small group. Consequently, remembered yes, but not hugely.

  20. I agree. They are borderline. They've had solid sales, but they're a generic bore for the most part. They remind me of U2 at their most flaccid moments. They often seem the like the go-to modern band to refer to if you have limited knowledge/appreciation for modern rock music but want to seem like you're in the know.

And cheers to you for admitting that you have limited knowledge/exposure to new artists rather than simply writing them off as not being as good as the ones in your youth when you were also a rock 'n' roll superstar. Bold for this site, at times.

    Best,

    Bill

PS If you do have old-school rock leanings but would like something interesting in this century, please let me recommend Songs: Ohia's The Electric Magnolia Co. It's the album I wish Neil Young had made in this last century.

  21. As far as the UK.....Coldplay.
For the life of me tho I can't see why.....They have become duller and simply boring with each album.

simple...NONE. Most (since 2000) aren't even remembered 10 years later let alone 45. In 45 years the music industry will be no more.. the way it's going maybe even in 25 years. the music "Industry" today is a joke compared to 20 years ago and even then it was laughable. I suspect real music made by real musicians will be almost an artifact of a lost generation and will be only remembered via "Youtube" or whatever replaces it or in museums...probably accessed only via a chip in our brains. I predict physical media will be completely gone within 20 years if not sooner and live music will follow not long after and be driven completely underground.
Anyone who thinks music, as we know it, will still be around in the year 2070 or earlier is kidding themselves. I will be glad I probably won't be around to witness it..it's getting sadder every day.
