Very true. Jazz was the sound of America for roughly 40 years, and it's really only a handful of jazz artists that are "hugely" remembered, sad and unfortunate as that may be. If very few people can remember the rest, do you really think Ed Sheeran and or Rhianna or anybody else mentioned in this thread will be hugely remembered? Why? Barely anybody remembers Shania Twain or Eminem in 2017 and they haven't even been away that long. The artists that the OP specifically mentioned have the benefit of never going away and being a constant of American radio for 50 years. If anybody thinks any of the artists mentioned so far will be in the American consciousness every day for the next 50 years, Phil Collins has news for you.

uhh, you don't have to be a fan, but that's a fairly offensive remark. any/every genre has its own share of vaucous or vapid material. rap music is as valid and potentially full of 'substance' as anything else out there..

BadJack: "I don't know why they can't just reuse the original Protools master - it's what the artist intended."

Dead wrong Mike. Just because YOU don't get it or or like it doesn't mean much to history. Like ALL forms of music, there is a lot of forgettable nonsense out there, but there are quite a few lasting gems in every genre.

Oh please. My parents were wrong about my music, and my kids are wrong about my music.

    They are all simply WRONG.

So, that would be 2062. One hundred years after the first Beatles records.
I don't have a lot of faith in what will be happening at that point in time.
If people can and still do listen to music at that point I can't think of anyone since 2000 that is likely to be remembered.
    Not on any large scale.
I think people would still remember The Beatles and Dylan.
Hopefully some of the great names in Jazz. Hopefully what we know as classical will still be appreciated. I wouldn't bet on it.

U2 are the last of the mohicans. I don't think there will be another band that big again.

Well put. At this moment, this thread is just above the Seals & Crofts thread that laments their fading into obscurity. I wasn't really a fan, but how do you forget them? I still hear their music in commercials at least.

About a year ago, a young-adult music fan asked me who is Buddy Holly...still reeling from that. I've also been asked to identify the less important but still pretty famous Adam Ant, Bauhaus, and Olivia Newton-John, among others.

I wouldn't lay bets on anybody now. The tides turn far too quickly now with streaming and with Top 40 radio no longer an important source of music for the general public.

I would hope, some of the bands making the better pop LPs. New Pornographers and Pernice Brothers come to mind; maybe Cousteau.

Pernice and Cousteau both started before the cutoff (for the thread). I enjoy both but have no illusions anyone will care about them in 45 years.

Let me get this straight. Bing Crosby was a giant of American song for 40-plus years, in addition to being a huge movie and TV star, and the only time anybody remembers him is for three weeks before Christmas Day. But The Pernice Brothers and Coldplay are going to be on everyone's radar in 2062?

What does it matter? Who knows what people will care about by that point? For all we know, the great titans of classic rock may be completely forgotten. I'm pretty sure I won't be around to see it. All I care about is what sounds good to me right now. All this kind of speculation is just a way of saying "History will one day vindicate my outstanding taste!"

45 yrs from now the fans of current bands will be ,what, 60-75? That could be middle-age for them. Maybe only the beginning of middle-aged. The average life span of people born after 1990 could likely be 120 yrs.

So the bands/artists that are popular and (more important than popularity) socially significant today will certainly be as remembered and recognized as the bands you mention are today.

A great man once said it's hard to make predictions, especially about the future.

Who would have predicted that one of the most prolific and popular singers of the 20th century, Bing Crosby, would be remembered not for his massive output but for a couple of Christmas songs that were probably afterthoughts. Other than Christmas, he has essentially been forgotten.
