I'm broke now...
I got in a little late, but I still got the Ryan Adams and Paul McCartney 7"'s.
The line to pay was very long so I didn't browse because I feared my parking meter expiring.. Was in line for 35 minutes to pay.
I woke up at 5 AM to be the 9th person in line outside of J&R Music World. I get there about 2 and a half hours before the store opens up to buy the only two items that I wanted. They were the Paul McCartney "Another Day" 45 and the Buck Owens coloring book with flexi disc. Totally worth it! Happy Record Store Day everybody!
Managed to get
Public Image Ltd
Store was busy so I am glad I got these.
If anyone gets an extra McCartney,T Rex and Devo let me know.
I would love to get them but have to work today unfortunately.
I am not a big collector, but like to check out the excitement of RSD nontheless. My local record store had only about 10 people in line, one of whom had no idea why there was a line! I picked up the one item I wanted, the McCartney "Another Day" 45, as well as a Tedeschi Trucks Band "Revelator EP" 4-song cd with one track that apparently will not be on the forthcoming live album (and a $2 off coupon for the live album). I had no idea that existed and was excited to get it for $2. I also grabbed a pin, a sticker, a tote bag, a Knaan vinyl single and about 7 cd samplers for free. There were a couple older gentlemen there, one of whom grabbed the only other copy of the McCartney 45, and the Phish lps. The "stylish nerd glasses" younger guys there seemed to be going for the Bowie picture discs, which were quickly snapped up by the first 2 people.
Nothing. Arrived 45 minutes early and the line was so long that all the good stuff was gone. All I really wanted was Esperanza Spalding and the Misfits, but no dice.
Picked up the following:
Flaming Lips/Mastadon 7'
Bruce Springsteen 7"
Flaming Lips & Heady Fwends
Grateful Dead - Dark Star
Uncle Tupelo - No Depression
Metallica - Beyond Magnetic
Billy Bragg & Wilco - Complete Mermaid Avenue Session
I've only played the Metalica and Flaming Lips 7' so far. Metallics sounds very good on vinyl for what the recording is. It blows away the cd by far.
I normally tend to stay away from the 7" releases because I've found such spotty quality in the past, but I have to say that this Flaming Lps/Mastadon release is flawless. The sound is great and the quality is the best I've had for a 7" since the Big Star release a few years ago.
Janis - The Perle Sessions
Jerry Lee Lewis - Live at Third Man
I got to my shop an hour before it opened at 9:00 and there was quite a line. The first people said they were there at 5:30. It was a quasi-organized mob. I had been looking for other things but the walls were just about stripped when I finally entered the shop.
Hush Arbors/Arbouretum split
Three Lobed compilation
Animal Collective 12"
Didn't pull the trigger on any of the special vinyl, but would have bought the Waterboys 45 if they had it, but it's pretty limited release.
I did pick up some good stuff on sale and walked out with a lot of samplers. I'm going to another store later on that always has promo stuff they give away, so I'm not done yet.
the two Luna releases and the Black Keys El Camino 45rpm
Paul Simon Graceland LP
Here's my purchases:
Steven Wilson – Catalogue / Preserve / Amass (12”)
The White Stripes – Handsprings / Red Death At 6.14 (7” Red Black Vinyl)
Grateful Dead – Dark Star (12”)
Ryan Adams – Heartbreak A Stranger / Black Sheets Of Rain (7”)
David Bowie – Starman (7” Picture Disc)
Velvet Underground – Loaded (12” Pink Vinyl)
The Flaming Lips / Mastadon – A Spoonful Weighs A Ton (7” Pink Vinyl)
The Black Keys – El Camino (2LP 180G + 7”)
Leonard Cohen – Live In Frederiction (12” EP)
Pete Townshend – Quadrophenia Demos (2 x 10” packaged together in slipcase)
Public Image Ltd. – One Drop (12”)
Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac (2LP @ 45rpm)
I got up at 5:30 and arrived at my local store at 6:30, the queue was long and I couldn't stay beyond 9:30 anyway so went home disappointed. Asked my girlfriend to see what she could get (without high hopes) - she arrives at 10 at another store just opening with no-one queuing and she picked up all of the above. Crazy! Only thing I couldn't get was Kate Bush & the Rory Gallagher for a friend (this disappeared surprisingly quick).
May actually have another Steven Wilson and White Stripes if anyone's interested in doing a deal for the Phish Pollock Junta that you all got in the US.
Happy RSD everyone!
Only went to one store to try and find the Phish release, but they had opened a few hours early and all copies were "long gone". Oh well.
Here's what I grabbed this morn:
The punk records, The Misfits and Refused were among the first to be snapped up, so I missed out on those. Also wanted the Bill Evans 10" and Captain Beefheart but I don't think my local ever got those in. People seemed to be going nuts for The Flaming Lips record but I decided to pass on it. I was happy to get The Chocolate Watch Band 7".
The store I went to was a cluster f#. The owner said he was opening at 9 am. He did not have his act together and the doors did not open till almost 10:00 am. I was 4th in line. This will be the last time I go there.
I was only able to pick three items up
Flaming Lips 2LP (which is amazing)
Byrds - 8 Miles High 45
Lee Perry - Blackboard Jungle Box
A great day at Johnny's!
I just ordered the 2 lp flaming lips on line. At least I will get it!
A friend went for me: Metallica, Ozzy, Genesis. I did not "get the Knack" (pun intended) like I'd hoped.
He bought the Flaming Lips 2LP and one of the Lips singles.
You are going to love it. Fantastic stuff.
