Gilbert O'Sullivan's Alone Again (Naturally) for me. Can't think of a song sadder than this.

I find it is Roberta Flack - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.

I find it so sad I can't listen to it.

"Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven":

it may not be "The Saddest Song"; however the subject matter is crushing too the heart, mind, & soul yet his beautiful rendition raises above it all.

"Mother Love" by "Queen", the last ever recording of Freddie Mercury. And the last verse is sung by Brian May, cause Mercury couldn't do it anymore.

"Can't Cry Hard Enough" - The Williams Brothers. The understated production by David Kershenbaum prevents it from going into maudlin territory.

"Gulliver" from Elton John's Empty Sky album. Worse than watching Old Yeller.

An extreme example - "The Spider" by Weezer, which is the most pathetically 'emo' song I've ever heard (yes, even worse than Simple Plan's "Untitled") that it always gets the skip button from me.

    Some nominees:

    "For No One" (Beatles)
    "Cause" (Rodriguez)
"A Rose For Emily" (The Zombies)

And Paul McCartney's "Little Willow" is sad when you realize how bad Linda's cancer was at the time it was written.

Saddest ever is a ridiculous concept.

But some consider to be profoundly sad:

    1) Peter Hammill: This Side of the Looking Glass
    2) David Ackles: One Good Woman's Man
    3) David Ackles: Waiting for the Moving Van
    4) Neon Philharmonic: F Scott Fitzgerald and William Shakespeare

Any song about a dog dying is usually pretty sad.
