Little Willow is a beautiful song, and it was written with regard to Maureen Starr's death of cancer to her kids as I recall, that's why I love Paul.

IMHO the NIN version is way more depressing and sad

Carly Simon has some deeply sad songs. Legend In Your Own Time, That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be, Haven't Got Time For The Pain.

When I opened this thread to read the responses, that is the first album that came to mind. I agree with you. I love the record, though.

This one actually has a personal angle for me - reminds me of my grandmother and grandfather. :(

The things that will haunt him until the day that he dies: The smell of cheap whiskey and the sound of goodbye.

I listened to this song with tears streaming down my face as my mom lay dying in a hospital...the unavoidable lyric "One of these days, and it won't be long...call my name, and I'll be gone. Fare thee well my honey, fare thee well."

Leon Russell - A Song For You. It make's me think of my old friends from the 70's who are no longer around.

Has no one mentioned Paul McCartney's song for John "Here Today"?

"And I am holding back the tears no more....I love you."

I tear up just typing that!

Or how about P. Hux and "Red Eyeliner"....

"It doesn't take much, a book she never read
The last dress she wore, the first words we said
None of these things will ever define her
All they make me do is wear red eyeliner

If you don't want me to cry, show me we don't really die
If you don't want me to cry, show me we don't really die"

Other Randy Newman songs have made this list, but no one has mentioned "Marie".

Liquidity - Marillion (this song has no lyrics but I think is charged with sadness).
