Coming Down Again: The Rolling Stones.
Hurt: Johnny Cash cover also ties with Cash's version of Help Me.

The River by Bruce Springsteen is intensely sad
so is I Just Wasn't Made For These Times by The Beach Boys

Moody River; our cat recently had kittens and while my mom was driving into our garage after the shopping trip, the little orange one didn't see the right front tire of our '51 Ford coming...

Elephant by Jason Isbell. The line "No one dies with dignity" is all too often true.

Another entry (hopefully I haven't already submitted these)

James Taylor - That Lonesome Road

Barbara Dickson - Another Suitcase in Another Hall (from 'Evita') - probably not expected with all these rock songs, but a pretty sad song nonetheless.

I don't expect my love affairs to last for long
Never fool myself that my dreams will come true
Being used to trouble I anticipate it
But all the same, I hate it - wouldn't you?

    So what happens now?
    (Another Suitcase in another hall)
    So what happens now?
(Take your picture off another wall)
    Where am I going to?
(You'll get by you always have before)
    Where am I going go?

Time and time again I've said that I don't care
That I'm immune to gloom, that I'm hard, through and through
But ever time it matters all my words desert me
So anyone can hurt me - and they do

    So what happens now?
    (Another Suitcase in another hall)
    So what happens now?
(Take your picture off another wall)
    Where am I going to?
You'll get by you always have before
    Where am I going go?

Call in three months time and I'll be fine, I know
Well, maybe not that fine, but I'll survive anyhow
I won't recall the names and faces of the sad occasion
But that's no consolation, here and now

    So what happens now?
    (Another Suitcase in another hall)
    So what happens now?
(Take your picture off another wall)
    Where am I going to?
(You'll get by you always have before)
    Where am I going go?

    Don't ask anymore....

46 pages of recommendations so far: this Music appreciation is quite the sad business. Barring duplicates and the many multiple entries, it's amazing we're even here to talk about it. Bloody hell.

The beginning of this song has such a killer melancholy rhythm. Incredible tune.

I love the tune but that's SAD to you? It's a positive love song - about as positive as they come.

    Agreed, it's sad in a happy way.:righton:
Still sad as the lyrics start out with mellow organ or synthesizer in the background.

This may not be the saddest, but this song really affected me.
