Is a factory sealed LP still “new” if it has been opened at the store but never played? I recently purchased a record I had wanted for a long time and when I got it home I discovered it had been opened and handled (fingerprints). It turns out that the record had a flaw, so I returned it. When I complained that it had been opened and then re-shelved with the other new vinyl, the clerk told me that indeed it was new. He stated that they have a very good customer that regularly spends big $$ there on a weekly basis and he is allowed to open anything he wants. The clerk stated that this customer had opened this particular record and must’ve rejected it due to the same flaw that I had discovered. Anyway, I’ve dealt with this store a lot over the years and I have not had any problems with them. I don’t think for a minute that they were trying to pull anything, but it just rubbed me the wrong way to have the clerk assert that the record was indeed new when it had been opened and handled. What say you? Was it new or used?
