His publishing kept him flush. I think he just stayed home and raised a family.

Digressing a bit, but a comment on musicians and alternate occupations.

"How can you tell a pr0fessional musicians car?"

"It's the one with the pizza delivery sign on the top!"

Mike Taylor, the brilliant acoustic guitarist who played on John Denver's (IMO) best albums in the early 70's and who has cowriting credits on "Sunshine On My Shoulders" and "Rocky Mountain High," quit the music business in 1973 and became a noted historian and archeologist in South Carolina. He died in 2010.

They were super-intelligent guys, weren't they? Pretty sure Roger Kunkel had a degree in something maths or physics-related.

  7. The Waitresses- lead vocalist Patty Donahue became a writer st ABC writing about politics then, later, an A&R executive at MCA record company. She died of lung cancer in 1996. Interesting side note while guitarist/songwriter Chris Butler didnt exactly leave the biz, he was a student before fame at Onio State during the infamous shootings by the Natinal Guard (immortalized in Neil Young's song "Ohio") at Kent State University.

Jutta Hipp (shown here with Zoot Sims) came to America in 1956, and had quit music by 1958. She worked as a dressmaker/seamstress for the rest of her life (she died about 10 years ago). Apparently, she never touched a piano after the 1950s. None of her friends (except Lee Konitz) had any idea she had been a famous jazz musician in Europe and America.

Kathleen Edwards has quit music (for now...?) and opened a coffee shop outside of Ottawa called, appropriately enough, "Quitter's".

  11. Probably just for now. She's already done a couple of gigs since "retiring" and has committed to a festival appearance next August. It's mostly benefit-type stuff so far, but from what I gather the laid-back café routine won't keep her satisfied forever...

No. I'm definitely not saying that. Any painting, even one done by a chimpanzee, is preferable to that song.

Now you have to say what you did after you left music. :)

Likky McKechnie of Incredible String Band and Kendra Smith of Dream Syndicate and Opal both walked off into the woods and disappeared. They may both be alive but neither apparently wants to be contacted.

Early Genesis drummer John Mayhew was another one who disappeared for a few decades before resurfacing at a band convention around ten years ago (and sadly passed away a few years after that).

Jimmy Lyons, guitarist extraordinaire for early Eddy Money (and co songwriter) has worked as a pilot.

It's important to realize that many many high profile )and not so high profiles) musicians never made a ton of money and had to establish alternative careers to be financially stable.

Ken Hensley of Uriah Heep had retired and was living in the St. Louis Missouri area and worked at a local music store - St. Louis Music - from the mid 80s until the early 2000s. He has since moved to Spain where he still resides.

Too, too true. The only real money is in songwriting.

First off, it's the hardest money for the record company to steal. The payments are fixed on a per song basis - you sell X number of copies, you get Y number of dollars. The only real way to steal songwriting money is to either own the artists publishing company or for the record weasel to actually put his name on the song (hello, Berry Gordy).

So while a songwriter like Ric Ocasek can live off of the songwriting royalties of The Cars, someone like Greg Hawkes has to keep working, either as a musician or in some other field.

Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser wasn't a musician but an author and promoter, and the man behind the Ohr, Pilz, and Kosmische Kuriere labels. These were very influential in German underground/prog rock, and some of those albums have since gone on to gather much more acclaim than when they were initially released. Anyway, he left the business in the mid-70s, and aside from a couple of failed attempts to claim a financial stake in reissues of his label's recordings, he has disappeared completely from the public eye along with his girlfriend. There have been all sorts of rumours abound about what they've been up to ever since and whether or not they are still alive. The most plausible-sounding story I've heard is that they live a very humble existence, and choose to maintain contact with only a handful of people.

Allan has explicitly stated in interviews as recent as this year that his voice wasn't up to it any more. He's been enjoying his hobbies since 1999 it seems.

Terry Sylvester (Graham Nash's Hollies replacement) became a real estate agent in the '80s but since the '90s has been touring on the North American oldies scene.

I find it very hard to believe that John Deacon isn't vastly wealthy!
