So far none of my kids have shown the least bit of interest in my collection, except perhaps the Lady Gaga and Katy Perry LP's. Knowing my wife, she will probably give them to Goodwill when she's in one of her cleaning fits. :(

But I've actually been on the receiving end - did a lot of garage sales, a few estate sales and the thrift store buys this year. For the latter two, I sometimes wonder just who owned these old LP's I bought - did they play them often? And if it's a thrift store, did they give them away or did they pass away and their kids offloaded them? The ones with names and dates of purchase are particularly poignant - I even have one LP that someone gave as a gift to someone else.

I've actually thought about writing a short note inside the jacket on a few of my LP's, given the idea that I will never sell them. But perhaps, some day, if vinyl is still around and I'm not, someone will buy a few LP's of mine at a Goodwill, look inside and know who owned them, how much enjoyment I got out of them and wish them the same. :)

Speak for yourself, my records are highly desirable! :D

Anyone who chucks all these 1st pressings (Blue Note, Impulse, Riverside, Contemporary etc) and 45rpm audiophile reissues is an ignorant fool who doesn't know the value of these records. If they have access or any say to my stuff when I'm gone, they will know what it's worth!

I understand what you're saying, and my son knows that many items in my collection are valuable and desirable. I've explained to him that he can go to eBay and check out prices, and if something isn't listed on eBay, it's likely very valuable.

The point for me is that if my son doesn't like my music and wants to sell it for whatever reason, it's his to sell. I won't be around anymore to enjoy it, so whatever he does is up to him. He does understand the concept of value to other people. So again, if he sells and makes a pretty penny, that's his choice. It'll be my gift to him.

One mans gold is another mans pile of crap. That's the way it goes.

"You can have the lot for $100!...No?...Okay $75!"

May parents house if full of antiques and quality furniture. Already told them I don't want any of it if it comes to inheriting and it will all be sold off. They agreed, why would I?

What about selling to other music fans and donating to Heart & Stroke Foundation, Cancer Society or other worthwhile charities?

My daughters and son-in-laws will take some of it, and the rest will go on eBay/Audiogon.

  10. I told my wife that if anything should happen to me, call up some of the better stores in the area like Rockaway or Freakbeat and take the best offer for all of it with the least hassle.

Hopefully my son is interested: although he's only 10, this year he enjoyed concerts by Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, so he's growing up with music. Otherwise, I hope my wife and son will give my collection to my music loving friends and/or colleagues.
Last year I got a lot of jazz-lp's from the collection from an uncle who died. And although I don't play them much, I just like the idea that the records are safe and well in my house.

Very interesting. My dad gave me his album collection years ago. There wasn't much that wasn't trashed and I ended up selling it for a few hundred bucks and giving him the money.

What he did give me that I treasure to this day,is the "love" of music in whatever form it may take.

I don't think my kids will ever feel the way I do about music and that makes me sad. They just see it as a commodity like most sheep do now days.

    Cheers!

When I die, I'm going to heaven. Heaven, in my view, is what you want it to be. So I want it to be a nice little cozy bedroom filled with all my favorite records and my favorite vintage stereo equipment where a lean young girl visits me on occasion. Thus I am taking with me to the grave all my records and my gear so that when I check in up there I'm ready to settle in for the long haul. I'll play It's Only Rock N Roll all day and nobody but nobody will tell me to turn that damn music down!

My kids enjoy music as much as I do, but mostly other kinds. And they don't have the same appreciation for the physical format that I do. They'll never get why I like my records and CDs, or why one turntable or amp is cooler than another, or why in the world I still like to make cassette mix tapes.

    Cheers!

I live about 70 miles from Acoustic Sounds. I told my wife if I go first, call them and see if they're interested in coming over and making an offer. I told her they would pay more than the thrift shop.

If I die last, my stepsons will have to deal it. I really don't care what happens to it, but it would be nice if someone got some pleasure out of it.

My dad died this summer, and he had a condo full of antiques, collectibles, and antique furniture. I had visions of hiring a cross country mover to pack a portion of it up and move it half way across the country to my house. But I eventually faced with the reality of things including, the cost of packing and moving, the lack of space in my house, the cost of restoring some of the older furniture if I actually wanted to use it as furniture, the value of the items (not as much as I thought for some pieces). So I brought in an auction house that took the good stuff. I packed up about a half dozen boxes of items of personal significance and mailed them to myself. Then brought in the cleanout guys who took the rest.

I really like the idea of leaving it to the Forum.

In the here and now, it does sort of bother me that something I care so deeply about might end up in the trash when there are at least 30,000 other known audiophiles right here here who could continue to get enjoyment out of my collection.
