rarely a bad pressings..Ain't that refreshing?
This came upon reading the consistent reporting of bad vinyl pressings...in all my years of CD collecting I do not recall many BAD PRESSINGS...just the occasional bad mastering.

There are bad pressings, depends on the plant, the equipment and the know-how, pressings without the SID codes are better and the country is important also, believe me. The mastering is another stuff, we have the human factor.

I've got over a thousand CDs. Bought my first one in 1983, I think. Not a single defective one in the bunch, and every one, even the many West German ones (known, IIRC, for "pitting" and so forth), plays without fail, and many of them sound fantastic, and when they don't, it's the mastering that's to blame, as you suggest.

CDs rule, sometimes even the occasional bad mastering isn't as bad as it's made out to be.

EXACTLY! one of the best bangs for the buck! I get comfort out of knowing most of my collection will not fail me...of course there are the occasional screw ups, but if I was into vinyl I would be extremely pissed at the number of expensive, warped, noisy, etc pressings out there.

Agree. I will stay with the CD for as long as they are produced.

Hardly small, especially if you live in the UK. The odd thing is that very bronzed CDs will play perfectly, but others that show no signs of bronzing won't. As for bad pressings - they exist, but a tiny percentage.

I've been buying them for nearly 30 years. Never had one that had a playing problem.

I think I've only ever had to return one CD to the store because it wouldn't play properly.

That being said, I just download 99% of my music these days.

In over a thousand CDs only one bad pressing.
They are compact, once I ditch the jewel box.

yes, I had problem with some of my ACE CDs...that's it. In the big picture a minor incident BUT, huge when you find you have no recourse for a replacement other than making a copy if even possible!

And buying used CDs isn't so an act of faith like buying used LPs. Don't have to worry about hidden damage if one of the previous owners ever played the CD on the equivalent of a Crosley with a ceramic stylus.

I have had a couple (very few) bad CD pressings where a new CD would play with glitches and bursts of static sound.

I buy both, but I get what you're saying. CD's aren't going to suffer from surface noise or other pressing-type problems inherent with records.

Love used CD's, in particular....buyer's market, my friend!

I once got a poorly pressed cd. If you held It up to the light you could see the in aluminum layer (or whatever it is) was half missing. Would not play at all.

Also got Supertramp- Paris that actually played Mad dogs and English Men on disc two. The label showed Paris.

I also got way more cds that skip than I do lps

IIRC, Bear Family had a few with static problems. RARE!
yes unless they dance on them or use them for coasters it's pretty much guaranteed they will play. I've had a few disasters that still play all he way through...I once dropped a CD and was looking for it it was under my foot!
I guess the hype back then was pretty accurate.

I have over 3000 CDs... eg, I have the same CD done in West Germany, Austria, France, UK, USA and Netherlands and the sound is different (the mastering engineer is the same as well as the release), normally the CD made in Netherlands is the worst and the CD made in WG is the best... please this is not a rule but only a sampling.
