An obi is a paper sash placed around the outer cover (seen on the left in the link pic), common for many Japanese releases. The term refers to similar sashes or belts found in traditional Japanese clothing.

I'm not sure if that's an Obi or printed on the jacket, but I do have European and even US records that have an Obi. So it's not limited to Japan.

Edit: it looks like the notes on that Discogs entry state that there IS and Obi

It's a piece of paper that increases that price of the cd/lp you wish to buy.

  15. A ripoff*!!!

    Just Joking

The reason you see "OBI" mentioned so much on audio sites is for:
    Identification.
    Pricing [MSRP/reflective of release date].
    Collectabillity.
    Art [Marketing].
    Cool Factor.
    Snob Factor.

Rip off, throw away, and then realize that you shouldn't have done it.

It's not printed on the cover - it's like a Japanese obi. It goes around the cover and is removable.

[QUOTE="Edit: it looks like the notes on that Discogs entry state that there IS and Obi[/QUOTE]

That's what I'm questioning - is that really an obi?

@marmil Yeah I think it is. Obi would be the most standard term. Especially on a record

For me an OBI is a waste of time; people pay more for Japanese LP's and CD's with the original OBI strip intact, but who can read Japanese anyway? The OBI could say (in Japanese) 'You're a fool for paying extra for this CD just because of this card sash." Who knows? So it should be more about the sound on the record or CD than the OBI. I find them a nuisance anyway, so I just throw them away.

An OBI has value as it's part of the original authentic packaging. For some collectors, not having the OBI makes the package incomplete--as would a missing poster, lyric sheet, etc. Ephemera might be a good word. :)

One day international or odi is a 50 overs cricket match....

That's what my brain saw at least since I've been on a cricket tangent lately after finally growing bored of baseball.

Some American albums I've seen that have an obi are "Ryko Analogue" LPs from the late 1980s and early 1990s (Bowie, Badfinger, Hendrix, et al.) and original U.S. Epic pressings of Cheap Trick at Budokan.
