The Alec Baldwin movie? I think it's mediocre but not genuinely bad:

My nomination is "Humshakals" - a 2014 Bollywood film, and no small independent release, this was a big budget film with a major Bollywood star (Saif Ali Khan).

    The plot:

Our hero's father is in a coma and apparently near death, so he is about to inherit his father's billion dollar company. But his secretly-nasty uncle will gain control of the company if the hero is found to be mentally incompetent. So of course the uncle has an evil scientist develop a potion that makes humans act like dogs for 24 hours. Our hero and his best buddy drink it, act like dogs, and are committed to a mental hospital. But wait! In the hospital are their exact doubles (even though all 4 men are unrelated), who have developed mental illness after being electroshocked by gangsters. So the mentally ill lookalikes are released and assume the lives of the their lookalikes - but wait! In the mental hospital our hero and his buddy come across the most violent man in the world - a germaphobe who goes ballistic when anyone sneezes (let's hope no one sneezes for the rest of the film, kids!), but wait - after shaving his beard we see he is an exact lookalike for the uncle. But wait! The evil scientist institutes "Plan B", and through amazing plastic surgery techniques known only to him turns his two flamboyantly gay lab assistants into exact lookalikes for our hero and his buddy. So we have 3 versions (original, mentally ill, and flamboyantly gay) of our hero and his buddy, and 2 versions of the uncle (original and germaphobe madman). The wackiness peaks when three of the lookalikes dress as women, and in typical Bugs Bunny fashion three other lookalikes are massively attracted to them! How wacky!

I think that should be a different category/discussion altogether.... not understanding a movie is quite a bit different than (and shouldn't be a reason for) flat-out disliking it.

I'm one of the few people on the planet who actually really *likes* Heaven's Gate quite a bit. It's not a perfect movie by any means, but I don't think it deserves the almost universal hatred it receives.

  5. I think there should be some sort of qualification for "worst movie" because there are so many different measurement levels.
Not to mention some movies were made specifically to be terrible and in their terribleness they somehow overcome how terrible they really are.
Also, the backing and intention of a movie makes a difference as well. How great can a high school kid make a movie on a normal high school budget, with high school kid experience?
With that in mind I think the truly terrible movies are those that were properly backed, properly funded, properly advertised and intended to be a "good" movie from the onset.

Totally agree. If something like The Deer Hunter, or even Independence Day or The Blair Witch Project is the "worst movie you've ever seen", then I seriously believe you'd just put a bullet in your own head rather than trying to sit through some of the god-awful crap that *I've* watched over the years. :p

The worst movies I ever saw were so forgettable that I forget what they were. The last time I actually went to a movie was on the opening night of "Independence Day." The audiences in theaters is as bad as the films those theaters are actually playing.

Some of the movies that are subject of MST3K are so bad that even the snarky comments couldn't keep me awake.

I enjoy most so-called "bad" movies, so something has gotta be REALLY bad for me to say it out-and-out sucks. With that in mind... the worst movie I've ever seen was a horror cheapie called "Carnage," a no-budget "Poltergeist" or "Amityville Horror" style haunted-house movie. I learned later that it was directed by a chap named Andy Milligan, who was sort of a New York version of the infamous Ed Wood Jr. - a inept maker of ultra cheap schlock films for the "grindhouse" market. He apparently has quite a cult following, though after seeing this movie I can't imagine why.

As a side note: I sometimes believe that I have a form of film watching O.C.D. which demands that once I start watching a movie, I must sit through it all the way to the end, no matter HOW bad it is. I think on some level I'm afraid in the back of my mind that if I don't know how the story ends, that "not knowing" will bother me forever and ever. I know it's irrational, but it's how I roll.

Anyway, "Carnage" put that O.C.D. to the absolute test, I swear I was praying that the sweet release of Death would come for me and end the misery of watching this terrible movie. Everything - the plot, the acting, the dialogue, etc. - was utterly atrocious. I mean, I couldn't even laugh at it in a "this is so bad it's good" kind of way. It was simply GOD AWFUL.

I bought this DVD at a dollar store, and were it not for the fact that Mr. Milligan was already long dead by the time I saw "Carnage," I swear I would have hunted that guy down and demanded my dollar back.

Previously, "Sleepaway Camp" had been my "Worst Movie I've Ever Seen" for almost twenty years, but as soon as "Carnage" finally came to its merciful end, I said "WE HAVE A NEW CHAMPION!" :D

"Bad" really just means it wasn't entertaining or engaging. Cool Cat Saves the Kid is a failure on all accounts except entertainment. That movie is hilarious!

Bad is when there's nothing left to salvage the viewing experience-- as in, Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler flicks, pretentious BS, and Knocked Up. :p

I think "Heaven's Gate" was attacked in its initial release as much for its out of control (for the era) budget and filmmaker excesses as for the movie itself.

That said, I think it's a mediocre film at best, and usually pretty boring. I've only seen the longer cut, which is allegedly better, but since I think it's too long, I might like the shorter one more:

Yup. I don't like "Deer Hunter" at all - I think it's a pedantic mess - but I'd never call it the worst movie I'd ever seen.

Now if people wanted to narrow if to worst "major" film they've ever seen, that could be a different discussion. Like you, I don't think "Independence Day" belongs in the discussion, as there are so many genuinely incompetent films out there. but if we narrow it to those with real budgets/real filmmakers involved, I see more of an argument for it.

Not from me, though - I thought "ID" was fun! Sure, it's ridiculous, but it's entertaining...

"Paranormal Activity" is certainly one of the films whose success perplexes me. Nothing happens!

Katie Featherston sure was purty, though!

Speed 2 and Zoolander 2 were mentioned above.
These fall under - What did you expect?
Sequels are going to be bad by definition.
There are some good sequels but they are rare exceptions to the rule.

My personal choice: Casino Royale (2006).
Saw it opening week and literally felt a giant punch in the gut for the duration. A complete rejection of all that had come before not to mention losing the character himself in the process of trying to jump on the Bourne bandwagon and crafting a Batman Begins styled reboot.
It has no style nor is there any sign of the character Fleming created. 007 is first and foremost an intelligence man and a total loner. This new person Craig plays is a brute thug who would be better as the third 00 who always bites the dust.
I can't wait for this to be over and maybe get back to business. These new abominations are not Fleming's character nor are they the series characterization. And the plotting is just awful.

The short edit doesn't even make sense . . . The movie is more an emotional spectacle than a story, and removing the viewer's investment in the characters by severely abridging scenes that don't advance plot and action transforms the movie into a mediocre Western with a very violent denouement involving characters we barely know.

HEAVEN'S GATE is structured almost identically to THE DEER HUNTER. Instead of a Greek Orthodox wedding, we get the graduation ceremonies at Harvard (inexplicably filmed in Oxford). We get a confusing, very bloody war where the protagonists all magically run into one another. Then we're left a control freak survivor who wonders what it all was for.

Despite the abundant flaws, though, I genuinely like and admire both movies. And cinephiles should watch both in the best possible presentation for Vilmos Zsigmond's photography. I'd rate both films as among the best ever examples of great cinematography.

Ummm...Because they are. Will Ferrell in Talladega Nights, Step-Brothers, Old School, The Other guys, Elf...Very Funny movies. The others have their moments in filmdom also. Sure, they've made some dud movies, but for the most part I liked them and cannot fathom how some people have no sense of humor.

From recent movies that I have watched here's a list of BAD movies that could have been good. I was able to watch them all the way through "thinking" they were going to get better....they didn't. These are recent movies I've watched. On a ten scale these are 1's & 2's.

    Maggie with Arnold S.
Rock The Kasbah with Bill Murray
    Nebraska with Bruce Dern

Either Red Dawn movie, both were terrible. I could go on with more but the poster asked for the absolute worst movie.

Prior to children I always enjoyed film festivals. Saw some of the best and worst movies doing this. Two that I remember being particularly bad were "Trouble Every Day" staring Vince Gallo and directed by Claire Denis. Did not work for me at all. Some folks cheered at the end so I may have been in the minority. The other was "The Saddest Music in the World" directed by Guy Madden. I believe this one won a number of production awards but I found it just boring and painful to sit through. I've certainly seen worse on cable or just channel flipping but these two are the worse ones I purchased tickets for.
