Especially as Mitchum's portrayal in the original was so good. I think the remake was trying to be too shocking - I suppose it had to cater for modern sensibilities - or the lack thereof.

    The Big Lebowski.

The characters are great; the plot, not so much.

I much prefer the effing short version (on Youtube) :shh:

I'll limit this to movies I've paid to see:

Nukie (the worst children's film ever made)
Zardoz (I want to say this move is so bad its good, but it is SO bad)
Water World (probably the highest hype:fail ratio in my lifetime)
The Time Machine (the remake from 2002 with Guy Pierce)

I also paid to see Glitter, but that doesn't count because I saw it as part of a drunken showing with a live cast (you might say it received the Rocky Horror treatment).

While I won't claim my (strong and maybe strange) aesthetic opinions are unquestionably superior to those of others, I'm sad to see people listing so many challenging art-house and cult classic films (even if some only appeal to a niche audience). A failure to "make sense" to or entertain the viewer seems to be the ultimate failure for some people.

I think I can understand this as there was a time when I would feel betrayed when a film violated my expectations - in fact, I can remember the last film that caused this reaction: Lindsay Anderson's If... with Malcolm McDowell. By the end of it, I was so pissed off (so did all that really happen or what!? - and what's the point anyway?). Several weeks went by and I continued to discuss this movie with someone who had some insight into it. While I never came 'round to ENJOYING this movie (though I have since come to APPRECIATE it), something more important happened. I began to re-evaluate my reaction to film in general, and have since come to the conclusion that movies (like other art) should be evaluated on their own terms.

    "Uncle Meat" on DVD.

Painfully boring, much to my chagrin (had been waiting for FZ to finish it for over 10 years!).

Armageddon by a long shot. The massive array of scientific inaccuracies was matched only by the embarrassingly juvenile dialog delivered by the worst acting ever put on film. Michael Bay should be banned from Hollywood for this abomination. He makes Ed Wood look like Orson Wells by comparison.

Not including here "trash" movies, but the supposedely wannabes :)
Some of the best of the worst :)

    L.A Confidential
    Matrix
    Hulk
    Random Hearts
    Legends Of The Fall

  8. A Countess From Hong Kong, Charles Chaplin's last film starring Marlon Brando and Sophia Loren.

People routinely say it's an awful movie, and I agree. If it's not the worst movie I've seen (tend to forget those) it's the most tedious. Sorry Charlie.

You bring up a valid point. The music in Popeye is horrible. But that same song "Shelly Duvall" is awesome for Punch Drunk Love.

    Gus Van Sant:

(*i.e. the films studios are most interested in making are sequels)

Now, I love Van Sant - many of his films fall into the "beautiful failure" category for me (e.g. Gerry)- but Psycho is pretty clearly a prank, and I still can hardly believe Hollywood took the bait.

If Natural Born Killers is a satire on media culture and televised violence, Psycho is a droll take on the ridiculous concerns of the movie industry. Is it good? Well, I think I'd prefer to watch that 3 1/2 hour movie of Andy Warhol taking a bath or even a 90 minute loop of the singing * scene in Pink Flamingos. But then, while not quite intentionally bad, the color shot-for-shot remake of Psycho is the most absurd cinematic experiment I've yet to encounter. At least it is honest - look at the result when Hollywood tries to disguise their debt to Hitchcock - you get things like Disturbia or M. Knight Shyamalan's unhinged egotism...

I can't believe how many are slamming the Coen Bros... even their worst film is "okay". I can appreciate a film that has a point of view and executes it, even if I don't like it personally.

I'm also seeing a lot of Oscar winners for Best Picture. Really?? The worst film you've ever seen? Perhaps in an overrated category in your opinion but WORST?

I can't stand "Silence of the Lambs" (my least favorite Best Picture), but it's still well made.

So I'd have to go with "Cabin Boy" (mentioned on here) and "Joe Vs. the Volcano" (also mentioned.

There are plenty of overrated films but the worst has to be bad in every way I imagine.

Other films I personally despise are, "If Lucy Fell" (mentioned here) and "Miami Rhapsody" (not mentioned yet) - any movie that tries to be a charming Woody Allen film almost always fails in a loud, embarrassing way - but the worst film film is "Cabin" and "Joe" to me.

I'm going by films that got a theatrical release here in the states.

    which one?

  16. Highway of Heartache. This godawful Canadian movie (which dealt with the hard life and loves of a hopeful female country music vocalist, IIRC) tried so hard to be ultra-kitschy and offensive, being full of fake sets, drag queens, and songs about such charming topics as having one's black baby kidnapped. And it just ended up being embarassingly awful, the kind of movie that you watch through your fingers not because of gore or nudity, but because it's so horrible and you start feeling so embarassed for all involved. But like a car wreck, I could not look away, although I should have. I think even John Waters would have qualms over this piece of dreck.

But most recent winner for me:

Skidoo, one of Otto Preminger's last films. Saw it on cable and wrote about it on a thread here. I saw better written and produced 8mm student films back in college. Hopefully, Otto's doing some time in purgatory for that one. That movie pissed me off. Really pissed me off.

No, seriously, it REALLY pissed me off...

Sorry. It looked great, but Stone completely destroyed the point he was trying to make.

  25. That Gus van Sant movie loosely about Kurt Cobain

    (from this summer) Wanted

    Pearl Harbor

    The original Casino Royale

Fahrenheit 411 (admirable premise, but execution and editing that changed meaning of what some people said defaced the genre)
