Silver Apples - I Have Known Love
Roger Rodier - My Spirit's Calling (1972)
The Magpie Salute - Wiser Time
"Only You" by The Platters - it fits all of 2017 and most likely will be in tune with 2018. For Lizvdk.
The one I've had stuck in my head lately
I've been playing this one all the time lately. This is the closing track from my favorite Crimson Glory album, Transcendence. Definitely one of the mellower songs on the album.
maybe because I'm hungry.
Seriously though Slim Gaillard is amazing.
At this very minute? Probably Danse Fambeaux by Dr. John from his masterpiece Gris-Gris.
B.B. King's cover of Leon Russell's Hummingbird.
'Night by night' by Steely Dan. It's been top of my playlist for the last three weeks or so. Even though I probably first heard 'Pretzel logic' thirty-odd years ago it still sounds fresh. Great intro, nice little twists and turns in the melody, splendid brass motif which gives the song an unmistakeable character, fabulous guitar. The lyrics could be about anything, as far as I'm concerned -- it doesn't affect the song, which breezes through to a strong fade. A little three-minute vignette of understated perfection!
If it counts as a 'song', the Tannhäuser Overture by Richard Wagner under the conduction of Daniel Barenboim is my favorite piece of music at the moment. I've started listening to Wagner only a few weeks ago, straight coming from building a Kate Bush collection and digging out the latest Peter Gabriel remasters, and I love the epic scale that many of his operas contain - the Tannhäuser overture is the peak of Wagner grand-scale, opening with a singular horn and building itself into a very dramatic, extremely moving violin motif before reaching multiple climaxes and collapsing in the calm solo singer who opens Act 1.
Rarely have I felt so small while listening to a piece of music
