We all have our favourites, but what is your favorite favourite Beatles song? One song only. Hard to believe, I know, but the first pages of search turned up zero on this. Lots of "least favorite" or "favorite Paul" or "favorite John" or "favorite solo Beatle" or "favorite on Revolver" but nothing with the ultimate Beatle question of all, that few dare to contemplate, let alone answer! My favourite favorite Beatles song: Paperback Writer
I'm divided between A day in the life and You never give me your money (I find this one a masterpiece, can't believe such a beautiful song exists).
It is the most Byrds-like song in their catalog - "If I Needed Someone". I will note the Beatles' three non-album singles they issued from late 1965 to early 1967 - "Day Tripper"/"We Can Work It Out", "Paperback Writer"/"Rain", and "Penny Lane"/"Strawberry Fields Forever" - may have been their absolute peak as a singles band. When you consider they released Rubber Soul and Revolver in the same time frame, their quality at that time becomes absolutely astonishing.
You Never Give Me Your Money. A tour de force no matter how you slice it. Love it. My goosebumps Beatles song.
Perfectly ok to fence-sit, waffle, and ruminate, but the Ultimate Music Corner Beatles comp may not include choices that are second guessed, or merely "settled for" because a fave was mentioned.
I have to combine "song" with "recording" as I've always strongly felt that The Beatles wrote records much as they did songs. I also feel that this was one of their two or three top artistic influences...they made it more than just about "the song" and showed how a good song could be a great record. Anyway, having said all that, my choice is for the one singular record which, for me, represents the originality and excitement that instantly affected me as a kid I loved them for, throughout...I Want To Hold Your Hand.
