Thriller: no more than 3 killer tracks, the rest utter dross (including the hideous title track).

I get none of those either except I bought DSOTM because of the SA-CD.

Hootie and the Blowfish. I lived in Columbia, SC at the time they hit and had heard them many times before. I remember wondering what the hell.

I could never figure out the allure of either Bon Jovi nor Slippery When Wet. Nor can I understand why they're still filling stadiums.

Back In Black. I do like it but there are plenty of other AC/DC albums I like just as well, if not better.

Two great songs: "I Will Always Love You" (not my favorite version, but a great song nonetheless) and "I Want It That Way," the only song of note from the boy band explosion of the late '90s/early '00s.

The Joshua Tree. I really really really tried to like this album, but I'd rather look at an aquarium.

Agreed on that. Wasn't it like 16 million?

Alanis Morissette Jagged Little Pill comes to mind too

Well, anything that appeals to a wide audience like...

    Shania Twain
    Celine Dion
Norah Jones (debut album was a huge seller)

People who want to buy a gift of music that dont want to take a chance...

But Pink Floyds The Wall puzzles me in that it is a hugely depressing storyline...but of course the initial sales were on the back of DSOTM and WYWH...

+1 and maybe Saturday Night Fever, given how much filler is on that album and that some of the best material was previously released.

Oh, and Grease, but I guess films really drove record sales in the 70's, much more than they do these days, even with the revival of the Hollywood musical. My guess is the fact that the DVD—which is often cheaper, and includes sounds AND picture—accounts for this slump.

Another case of the music business being in a fog. I'll never forget when The Concert for George came out, the DVD was like $10 cheaper than the CD!! Explain that one.

    anything by Mariah Carey

  23. +1. First one I thought of. I suppose a lot of it has to do with the popularity of the videos.

I disagree. It may not deserve to sell over 100 million copies (according to Wikipedea). I guess those music videos helped a lot. But I think it is a very good album and every song (well, maybe except one) is listenable. I think it deserves to be on the best-selling list, regardless of what else are on that list.
