Well, I've just watched the Crossfire Hurricane DVD again, and a lot of the people storming the stages and jumping all over the Stones at those early shows were dudes. They get just as excited as girls, only they act out in different ways - often violently.

As an ex-high school teacher I can say that nothing a teenage girl does could surprise me.

 

Daytime TV and late afternoon talk shows making monkeys out of people, shows about cooking that involve a cook with a potty mouth screaming at people competing with each other to see who can make the best goddamned sandwich, living on islands to see who craps out first, and in general people willing to do anything no matter how absurd to get their picture in the paper or on TV....

And you think there was something wrong with THOSE girls?

I think what was wrong with those girls in 1964 is the same thing that was wrong with teenage girls that were called "bobby soxers" in the 1940's whenever they went to hear this guy named Frank Sinatra sing. I hope this helps.

 

My theory is that most boys, by that age, have discovered wanking. Girls just internalize all their adolescent sexual frustration and then release it towards an unobtainable "cute" musician. Because if they came on that way to a "real" person they'd either get their feelings hurt or wind up preggers.
