I guess Whitesnake were popular in Europe way before they broke in the States! If Ozzy and Whitesnake played the US in 1983, there's no way he'd have been the opener! :)

Air Supply, I was 9 and my dad won free tickets on the radio. He didn't know who they were, but he loved winning free things and took me. On the way home he told me about seeing Hendrix at Red Rocks and then explained to me how all music made after 1972 sucked.

White snake did multiple tours in uk and europe between 1977-1984, if I remember correctly they were touring extensively in germany : some tours had more than twenty (!!!) dates for germany only in those years...and when they began to break trough in the states in 1987, they didn't tour anymore in europe between 1987 and 1992, except for some outdoors shows...

A long, motley event at Forman Field, Norfolk Va. in August 1965. General Admission: $4.00

It started out at noon with a "Battle" of local bands, proceeding through several East Coast groups. One I can remember was The Music Machine. They were very good. That was their last show for a long time, as three of the five members had recently received draft notices from Uncle Sam.

The big headliners were Tina Mason, and The Young Rascals. BUT WAIT, there's more...

The band backing Ms. Mason included several members of James Brown's band. And who do you think happens to show up unannounced? Yes, the MAN! James freaking Brown!

So they added an extra set to the show. J.B. & co. were stunning, red hot and funky. I had heard a tune or two by him on the radio, but this experience was just incredible.

I had just turned 14, sitting just in front of the stage. I was slack-jawed gawkin'.

Don't know how The Rascals felt about having been so seriously upstaged. Probably not too bad as they were in different genres they weren't exactly competing for chart positions. And were paid well I'm sure.

All in all I would say it was a very good start.

Rush at the LA Forum 1983 for Signals with Golden Earring in support. Blown away to see the heros on my walls playing in person!! Interestingly I last saw them at the Forum for their "likely?" final show.
