I'm sure there will be some clowns who will say "all of them" or something along those lines, but seriously, considering space issues and the the frequency of listening, how many can you really have and appreciate that you actually listen to.

Say you listen to four LPs per day for two years, without repeats, that would still be less than 3000 LPs.

That seems like a reasonable figure considering you will probably listen to some more regularly and some a little less regularly.

    What say you?

2500 is a comfortable number for me, but I'd prefer billions.

As many as there are albums that you want to hear. :edthumbs: I often blaze through about half a dozen albums (albeit on CD) before lunch.

Enough to fit on your shelf without them being in danger of falling over. I hate that.

But seriously, probably 100 or less. That way you know most of them really well, but can still be surprised by putting one on that you haven't played in awhile.

I've been trying to get down to 5000. Before I was married, my answer was "all of them."

Apparently it's one more than I have. Because I always swear I have enough and then I buy one more.

Enough where it doesn't become a problem if I need to move them. I'm thinking 1000 is where I eventually want to be.

More than you'll ever be able to play and just enough that you're never bored

I would guess that I have 1000 - 2000. I think 1000 more would probably be enough so yeah 3000 sounds like a good number.

Although, to be serious for a moment, and remove the "LP"....I think it's a valid question about how many albums one should have in a personal collection. I have realized lately, that my 30 years of collecting albums I probably have enough music I like (because I mostly ditch stuff I buy and don't end up digging) that I could just listen to those for the rest of my life, and not tire of them. I made a quick iTunes playlist of "desert island albums" and it told me it totled over 13days of straight play time. I could PROBABLY never listen to anything BUT my faves of the faves and not hear the same record twice in a LONG time...

That would mean you can listen to 3 records per day, almost everyday for about a year.
Seems about right. It's easy to want more records than that, but ultimately you'll end up
with a lot of records you haven't listened to in years after a while.

My guess is that I have somewhere around 1200. I try to imagine doubling my collection. I think very much over 2500 is getting impractical. Maybe when my kids are out of the house, I would consider breaking 3K.

One per day. Take your age and multiply by 365.

Whatever gets the most music for the least amount of shelf space. Unfortunately I'm far past that. I wish I only needed 100 albums.
