I remember what it was for me. It was in 1993 when Nirvana's In Utero came out. I remember calling the record store to check if they had it, then purchasing it later that day. Nothing since has come close to motivating me to do that. I miss the times when that happened often.

Steven Wilson's To The Bone, I think. Or Roger Waters' latest, whichever came last.

Both were on pre-order forever. To The Bone was the big book box set that ended up coming late, so the album was out and I was dying to hear it, but waited until I received the BluRay for my first listen. It was great!

Several times last year, though more often than not, I pre-ordered them from the artist and didn't go out for them.

But I certainly went to the stores on release day countless times since 1993.

I guess it says something that I have to go back 30 years to find an example...

In the week or so before The Joshua Tree came out, I could... not... wait... for the release. It felt like it was going to be important.

I know that must seem like 20/20 hindsight today. But I could swear under oath, to the best of my recollection, that's how it felt at the time.

Sort of related: I went into the Lincoln Center Tower Records soon after they opened one morning in 1988 - I don't remember why - and found they were unboxing the second Throwing Muses CD. I hadn't even known one was coming out. Having been a big fan of their first record, I pounced right on it. So I've always thought I must have been one of the first 100, maybe one of the first 20 people in the world to buy that at retail.

Maybe Iron Maiden's Somewhere In Time? (1986)

The more true reality for me is getting excited about an old album, but one I missed or never experienced firsthand.

I'm not voluntarily opposed to "newer music". I do find some of it I enjoy. But as I often say, who has time to dive into new music when there is already so much great previous music that can't even be absorbed in ten lifetimes, let alone one? :)

I'm always open, in theory, to any music that grabs me, but if the options are discovering established gems of the past by Miles Davis, Sinatra, soundtrack recordings, uncovered pop gems of the 60's, etc, or having to hunt for something that may or may not grab me as much from today, then the choice is pretty simple! Heck, there's only so much time, and we only live once. As far as I know... :)

You’re not alone in feeling that about The Joshua Tree. There was great anticipation for the album. Their time had definitely come. The advance reviews I saw were all phenomenal.

I'd say, either Agnes Obel's 2nd release, or Aurora's first album. There was a time there (when I was running my online radio station), that I knew there were some discs I needed to get, and some personal discs I wanted to get...as well as some minute additions to growing collections (like Various-Artists oldies series, Zappa 2012 remasters and newer "Project/Object" volumes, Christmas titles I hadn't sampled for on-air yet, and lots of different reasons for trying to balance-out my purchases to serve different "masters", every couple months or so. The ones I was actually excited about, were those I hadn't "needed" to keep up the Ariel Stream radio library, but the artists I'd sampled and were very anxious to add those voices to the newer categories of the playlist, giving some of the worn-down artists a bit of a rest. Obel the German pianist and young Aurora from Norway represent new styles of accessible music audiences around the world are about two years ahead of us on. And yes, the styles intrigued me to the point of wanting and needing to find out what the fuss was all about.

    I was not disappointed.

I still get truly excited whenever a current artist, or an old favorite releases something new, much more than i do reissues.

The two most eagerly anticipated album releases of the last year for me, both exceeded my expectations.

Truly excited? Probably all the way back to The Beatles Anthology 3.

So many disappointing releases since then have sucked the excitement right out of me. It's more like surprise if a new release actually meets expectations.

Pat Martino's "Formidable," from late October, 2017.

Also, these albums released in August and September, 2017:

Walter Trout's "We're All in This Together."
    Randy Newman's "Dark Matter"
Van Morrison's "Roll With the Punches"
    Kamasai Washington's "Harmony of Difference."

I am continually excited by new releases coming out now.

I can't see how one could claim to have more than a passing interest in music all the while finding nothing new to engage with in more than 20 years but that may well be a lack of imagination on my part.
In any case, these last years, I've been excited and thrilled by the work of Jim O'Rourke (my hero !), Kassel Jaeger, Oren Ambarchi, Joanna Newsom and will rush to listen to whatever they do next.

That's what I was going with. For me there was also the new Chris Hillman album, the new Stills / Collins album, and the new Shelby Lynne / Allison Moorer album.

How anyone can love pop music and not get excited by a New Pornographers record is a mystery to me!

And it seems like whatever style you like, there's someone out there with a great new take on it. There's thousands of people making great music these days, probably more then ever. Too bad the records are all brickwalled!

Not a thread-crap (I hope) but I can never remember being actually EXCITED about a new album coming out.

I've been excited about reissues of classic albums and I've been excited about hearing a classic album for the first time (as I was in 1982, when I bought Blonde On Blonde, knowing it was supposed to be great album and expecting to be knocked out by it, which I was). But as far as a completely new album is concerned....no.

    Sad.
