I still listen to Goats; in my opinion, the Stones' best '70s album.

    Exile
    needs an editor.

Lester Bangs wasn't too thrilled with it: "There is a sadness about the Stones now, because they amount to such an enormous 'So what?' The sadness comes when you measure not just one album, but the whole sense they're putting across now against what they once meant..."

"Winter" is easily the best thing on it. It has a draggy druggy feel, the main problem is that every single song is slower than it should and is a minute longer than it should be.

Jimmy Miller had lost "the reins" over the studio as well as their respect (due to his own encroaching "habits") by then.

As always, 'Stones' were influenced by the studio(s).
Lot's of Rockers weren't ready for Reggae. Even just a spilff!!
Studio(s) production, certainly played a bigly part as well!!
Would like to find out which songs were worked on where.
["Silver Train" '70 at Olympic/"Hide Your Love" Rotterdam]

Got into right away; even much more so than 'Exile'...
    :hide:
    which i consider a "Classic"!

    Luv ~
    "Dancing with Mr. D"
    '(Heartbreaker)'
"Angie" [weirdly fave 'Stones' for 2 decades/cause it is a ballad]
"Silver Train" [tho very slick/slippery even]
"Can You Hear The Music" [tripping]
    "Star Star" [fantastic/raunchy]
    +
    Taylor.
    Record sleeve was/is tremendous!

I like it a lot, even though some of it's a bit hazy. That's part of its charm I suppose. I'd much rather have it stay exactly as it is than have, say, Steven Wilson remix the thing.
It's a perfect product of its time.

Does anyone know who came up with the title, "Goats Head Soup"? And what does it mean exactly? To me, it just conjures up an air of voodoo...

It's a great album, and the tour that resulted (The 1973 European tour) was even greater, spawning Brussels Affair.

I think it's a classic album. The songs are great and the artwork is quite interesting for my eyes. Nothing to complain here.

Not sure why everyone craps all over "Hide Your Love" and "Can You Hear The Music". Both nice and spooky, a refreshing change of pace. Honestly I think I like it more than Exile, although I will admit that "Angie" did kind of wear itself out on me and if it comes up on shuffle play I find myself skipping it.

The album cover is pretty terrible, but let's be real, so are most Stones album covers.

You know, threads like this remind me to play albums like this that I haven't listened to in years, so thanks for that.

When I realize there are only four songs on it that I remember what they sound like from the title, it's time to give it a spin again, and it will be a spin, because I only have the original vlnyl, no CD.

As always, bands like the Stones eventually make albums that are considered lackluster but if they were some other band these albums would be considered..lustrous. :D

Hmmmm... that sounds about right. Quadrophenia, Close to the Edge and Dark Side did take up a lot of my listening time, especially The Who. Goat's Head...was a decent listen but it didn't draw me into the other worlds of some of these other classics.

They sort of sound spent. For the only time in their career, including as seventysomething men. In my opinion.

That having been said, I love Angie. Always thought Stones' ballads ranked with their finest work. As Tears Go By, Lady Jane, Wild Horses, Angie. Love them all.

And even though Goats Head Soup pales next to most of their other albums for me, I still recognize that 1. many people love it; and 2. The Stones' lesser efforts are still miles beyond most bands' best.

For me, there is nothing wrong with it. Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) and Angie are two of their best songs.

What standard cd version would one want? I like the sound of the Virgin releases of Sticky Fingers and Exile? Is this on Virgin too?

I never realized Charlie was already sporting the short haircut in '73. He always was ahead of the curve. Hard to believe now, but that was very STRANGE for someone in a rock band back then.

I've mentioned this on here before, but when I was a kid I thought it was a woman on the cover wearing a veil and a hat. I thought that for a long time actually.

It's great and has a swampy wibe that's very appealing. Can You The Music is the only filler, and it's intriguing in its fogginess. Star Star is what it is, at least a change in tempo.

It's not the short haircut that he had by time of Black and Blue, but it is shorter than he had it.
