Very good album ,essential for any Stones Fan.
Don't listen to the nay sayers on this forum they don't know squat about the Stones catalog.

Star Star ... Angie ... Heartbreaker. Most bands are lucky if they come up with 3 such anthems in their career. The Stones did it on one of their "lesser" albums.

They played Angie on the FM radio, way too much.

One of my very favorite Stones' records, easily in top 3.

The GHS songs on Brussels (Angie, Heartbreaker, Mr. D, and Star) smoke the album versions imo. Taylor cut loose live and lifted those first 3 songs to the next level.

It sounds like the work of a very burned-out band that couldn't muster the energy. Plus, as others have mentioned, it's a poor-sounding album.

I always hate to see this as an excuse for not liking something.

    This is a great record.

  8. It's diminished by what came before but it has some fine songs and even the bad ones, I enjoy.

Only Studio Stones LP I've ever owned, followed by Hot Rocks & More Hot Rocks! I liked it.

The only problem with GHS is that the music is too sophisticated for all the hipsters who've bought into the Exile hype over the decades.

Only thing wrong is the front and back covers should have been reversed.
Match Head Keef for the win.

Good album. I play it from time to time.
"Winter" is my favourite from it.

They played Stairway and Back In Black too much as well. Guess those albums suck.

Picked it up used on LP several years ago-- even back when I was digesting all of their classic albums on CD, I didn't check this out then.

It's surprisingly not bad in parts, but it comes off unfocused most of the time. This is certainly where the quality began to go south on their records.

I put it on recently, and found Side Two kind of a big snooze, so Side One wins.

Well, or like bank robbers in a Salvador Dali film. (Or actually, more of a Rene Magritte film given the motif.)

Definitely not their greatest, but a huge improvement over Exile.

It needs one more uptempo rock 'n roller and one less draggy ballad.

I'd have to say Exile smokes GHS quite easily.

That inner sleeve is a bit off putting. Otherwise, a very solid effort.
    "Dancing with Mr. D"
    "Starf&%ker"
    "Coming Down Again"
    "Heartbreaker"
    "Silver Train"
    Hell, i even dig "Angie"
The next LP is a lot better and much more "Rock 'n Roll."

I have always liked it a lot and play it a lot. My guess for the general populace is that it is not as serious an album as the ones before it. It was the Stones glam album. It was all fun, you know, dancing with the devil.

Aftermath 1966 through Exile On Main Street 1972 is all you need to know.
The Stones had an album run that parallels 1960's Bob Dylan & The Beatles.
The Stones were do for a dud, law of average had come into play with GHS.

I love GHS regardless. It's murky but so is Exile, GHS is just the Stones letting loose and not worried about making an album better then the last. The boys were tired and burned out from this historic album run of 1966--1972, plus the constant touring. GHS had some great musicianship, love to spin this vinyl or cd and just dive into Stones 1970's.

    Personnel:

    The Rolling Stones
    • Mick Jagger – lead and backing vocals, rhythm guitar on "Winter", harmonica on "Silver Train", piano on "Hide Your Love".
    • Keith Richards – electric and acoustic guitar, backing vocals, lead vocals on "Coming Down Again", bass guitar on "100 Years Ago", "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)" and "Silver Train", lead guitar on "Star Star".
    • Mick Taylor – electric, acoustic and slide guitar, backing vocals, bass guitar on "Dancing with Mr. D" and "Coming Down Again", rhythm guitar on "Star Star".
    • Bill Wyman – bass guitar.
    • Charlie Watts – drums.
