For a lot of fans, I'm sure that the limited number of "rockers" is a negative, but for me, Star Star, Silver Train and Hide Your Love feel out of place. To my ears, the narcotic vibe of the album is its strength and I prefer listening to a rejigged CDR that goes:

    Dancing With Mr. D
    Tops
    Coming Down Again
    Angie

    Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)
    Winter
    Can You Hear The Music
    Waiting On A Friend

GHS is one of the band's highlights IMO. Silver Train will forever a favorite......

Personally, I would have preferred something a bit more democratic...

After a long run of amazing albums, it's just pretty good.

I love GHS, but to be fair there are some significant shortcomings. Clearly, there is a drop in song quality from EOMS to GHS -- which is to say it's a very good album, but not a great one, per se. It also signals the end of the Stones' great period. Even though GHS isn't a great album per se, The Stones would never would never reach this level again. It's Only Rock & Roll was very slight drop down from GHS, and every album after would continue a decline (although they would make more great music). This was in part brought about by Keith's drug addiction and Mick Jagger's descent into total jackass-mode (I wanna be a teen idol, unfocused, Studio 54, douchey mullet haircuts, pretentious, calculated, phony, contrive and sissy-boy dancing). Don't get me wrong, MJ is by far my favorite Stone, but I don't think I could be in his presence for 30 seconds without wanting to strangle him -- it only makes sense that KR chose to heavily medicate himself, thus The Sones became a bit sluggish on GHS.

Actually, Mick Jagger thought they looked like a bunch of poofs, and it was wife Bianca who had to persuade him those scarf photos were great, and that they should use them for the album sleeve.

I don't think it's their best, that's still "Exile..." for me, but GHS is a good album, solid, if slow paced. I still listen to it. I quite liked it when it came out.

Supposedly the tentative track listing included Through The Lonely Nights and Criss Cross. These ended up being replaced with Winter and Coming Down Again.

I never cared much for Can You Hear The Music. I would have rather had Criss Cross included instead.

Here are some other tracks that were worked on during the sessions. The album night have sounded a little differently if some of the these were included and/or completed instead of some of the songs that were chosen.

    Through The Lonely Nights
    Short And Curlies
    Waiting On A Friend
    Tops
    Criss Cross
    Fast Talking, Slow Walking

They were really focused on the slow numbers at this point, huh?

They really let a classic slip through by not finishing Criss Cross Mind. I guess Keith kiboshed it huh?

It came after Exile and wasn't as ambitious - that's always a problem.

I'd say that it does have a coupla duffers and really isn't a step forward for them, but it doesn't deserve the critical drubbing it got. It's still a great album.

Mick Taylor has stated that Mick Jagger liked to work with him on the ballads when he was in the band.

I do like how "100 Years Ago" starts out one way and gradually picks up momentum towards the end of the song. One of my favorite tracks on the album.
