Always wondered what Reggae fans thought of Bob Dylan's foray into this type of music.

    So much great stuff.

The earliest Wailers, the Congos, Tosh, Toots, Scratch Perry, the Upsetters, the Melodians, the Skatalites, Desmond Dekker, Jimmy Cliff, Junior Murvin, Max Romeo, etc., etc..............................

If I were going to start, Id get:

    Scratch Perry - Arkology
    The Harder They Fall
Bob Marley - Songs of Freedom
As many as I could find of the amazing Trojan 3-disc box sets

  7. In small doses - and so long it isn't Bob Marley, on whom I am burnt out totally.

Talk about a rich vein of popular music, even if it's a specialist taste here in the US!

I'm a fan of Roots, Ska, Dub, Dancehall and more, even if the whole range is less than 5% of my library. "54-46 Was My Number," by Toots & The Maytals, "Zungguzungguguzunggguzeng," by Yellowman, and The Congos' "Fisherman" may be my favorite Roots tracks. Tenor Saw's Fever is my dancehall classic. King Buster is welcome on my stereo anytime. Scratch Perry is almost untouchable, when lucid.:shh:

Among the modern stuff, you're more likely to hear something from Popcaan's Where We Come From around my place, these days.

You really should! I've been five times now and, unsurprisingly, you'll hear reggae everywhere. Fantastic laid back vibe, and it's not hard to find a party. Negril's the place to go,or Kingston of course. But I also love Treasure Beach.

Everything!!! I do recommend Third World's 96 Degrees in the Shade as one of a few albums to anyone starting out, gorgeous stuff. Bunny Wailer's Blackheart Man also.

I've started digging into reggae after liking a few things I've heard over the years. When I hear something I like ,I like it a lot and am often amazed at the uniqueness of the recording. On the other hand I hear some that strikes me as the most boring mess I've ever heard.

I still haven't quite figured out the differences between the various branches so I can't say I like this vs. liking that. I plan on listening to much more and will take some hints on what to check from the posts in this thread.

I like almost everything that is on the "Tougher Than Tough- Story of Jamaican Music" box. The first 2 discs are especially good.

    Anything else for a beginner?
