I know of first digital audio tape recorders appearing as soon as of 1972 (by Denon) and first multitrack tape recorders in 1981 (Sony PCM 3321), but when did video go digital? What were the first brands to market digital video recorders for professional use and what were the first productions shot to digital video? Was Panasonic D1 video format the first one to show off or there were earlier standards? Did early equipment record to component video or they were limited to composite? I think D1 was a composite-only video format. What kind of equipment was used on early THX video mastering for use on VHS and Laser Disc?
