When you are the oldest person at a gig...

  1. Of course, a good chunk of the fan base for those bands is over 50. I think it's kind of odd that so many college-age kids seem to be into the Pixies.

I'm in my 60s and I sometimes perform with people less than half my age. I probably look weird on stage but I still kick ass and people dig that. I just don't get the chick action anymore.

May as well get used to it.

You're not going to get any younger.

Used to party in music type bars & clubs in Singapore with 'younger Singaporian folks' all the time. I was age 30 to 56. Never paid any attention to it really. I was known as a 'local'.

Anyway ... I was partying 'there' way before they were. lol.

Gigs /concerts: music is 'timeless and ageless'. No worries. Age is more of a 'frame of mind' anyway, internationally.

You should be happy that all those younger people have the same taste as you, in my opinion.

Festivals and alternative/indie acts - no. Teen idols - yes, although I was perfectly comfortable at Maroon 5.

I went to an Everly Brothers gig and the queue for the restroom was longer than the queue for the bar. Cool show though

So long as I enjoy the music, I'm perfectly okay with it. Just look confident rather than self-conscious.

My wife and I (59) are usually the oldest at Red Baraat shows. Love the music and they tend to draw a pretty cool crowd, so it's all fun. Their music is a blast and I wouldn't miss it because of my age.

Y'know, that's something to always keep in mind for all of us over 50 who still seek and see great new live music.
Try not too look around all the time, folding your arms, or with hands in pockets!
Groove to the music, smile a lot if you're enjoying the band! A well-attended gig no matter where or who is playing is usually gonna be a lot of fun!

A Raquel Rodriguez concert or Elle King concert is inevitably going to have kids half my age and more! I didn't let that bother me.

Happened to me last week seeing Animal Collective. No one made fun of me, at least not so I could see them :)

Best of all I really enjoyed the show, and left with more energy than I came in with. You're only as old as you feel...at least to yourself.

A couple of years ago, my wife and I went to see The New Pornographers in a college town. I think everyone else in attendance was a college student. Anyway, I didn't feel out of place because everyone was having a really good time, us included. The concert was really uplifting and lovely (as one of the fellow concert-goers described it.)

You may not believe it now, but the reason you're bothered is because you're 'only' 37 and still thinking partly youthfully. In a few years, when you are comfortably past 40 you will not care what anyone else thinks and you can happily be the oldest at a gig.

I'm in a rural college town (Athens, OH/Ohio University) where the majority of show attendees are over 30. Usually WAY over 30. At punk rock shows, no less. Admittedly, that's not the norm, but I always get a kick out of seeing people older than me (45) rocking out.

Yes! In fact, you will despise everyone under 30. It's great!

Depends on if you like the music, and I guess the style of music.

At 37, I was watching Jack White do his thing in a 600 capacity nightclub, and was virtually invisible.
And never really felt that self-conscious, but I stand back and focus on the act.

I felt old at 22 seeing Run-DMC in early 1986, and was probably the oldest (and tallest, haha) in the auditorium.
Convinced my 16 yr old brother to go with me. "2 guys rapping, a guy scratching records with big guitar licks.....this looks like a no brainer to me."
The "Walk This Way" cover w/ Aerosmith came out about 3 months later. Did pretty well if you hadn't heard.

    So you know...

My eldest daughter bought her & I tickets at Christmas for 21 Pilots. Because I bought their CD after listening to about 15 YouTube videos a few months back. I thought they were creative musicians incorporating Dub, Punk, Rock, Ska, Hip Hop, Pop, Reggae & even more Pop into their music - once again, I brought new music into the house and it's backfiring on me. They're definitely a buzz band most recently by word of mouth amongst the younger generation. My wife liked the video & showed their video for the great single "Stressed Out" in her High School English class for media discussion and they loved it. First time many had heard of them but they were rabid for the duo.

I'm 57 years old. (I think.) I'm already embarrassed and the concert is in 6 weeks! I'm seriously considering giving the ticket to my youngest daughter, who is now a fan too, but the bride insists I go - "it was a gift - you have to go!", she says.

I'm definitely gonna be "that guy" and it's freaking me out. If there's anything resembling a mosh pit I'm a dead man.
