Not at all. One had 3 albums before even becoming a commercial juggernaut and a solid musical pedigree. The other was an immediate hit and nowhere near as successful overall (albeit they were more global). The only thing that they had in common is that they wee in what was dismissed as the “faceless
AOR act” dismissed by critics at the time.

having grown up as a kiss fan when i was a little pup, i found a lot of the eighties hair bands felt like a more polished kiss progeny ... and often, to me they sounded very similar to each other

If I like a band, I’ll focus on what makes them distinct. There’s a lot of overlap between Teenage Fanclub, the Byrds and Big Star, for example, but each of them are good enough that their works stand on their own merits. It’s only if a genre doesn’t interest me that I can’t get past the unifying tropes of the various bands. A metal fan could probably expound at length on the differences between Slayer and Sepultura, but I’d be unlikely to discern any difference. My loss, probably, but I don’t have the time to explore all the music I’d like to.

The Tea Party, I Mother Earth and Our Lady Peace. In my mind, they're all the same band. Disclaimer: I've never listened to any of them.

These two don't sound similar to me at all. The Byrds were psychedelic folk rock, initially responding to the British Invasion before developing a country twang. The Band was rootsy Americana without even a hint of psych.

How exactly do you find these band pairings similar?
I can see that Caravan and Soft Machine were both part of the Canterbury scene.
Journey and Foreigner might both be lumped into the AOR genre.
But The Byrds and The Band literally have nothing in common, other than the name of the band starts with “The” and the next letter is “B”.
Surely you don’t think these bands sound really similar, do you?

You've never heard any of these bands, but find them similar? Why? Because they're from Canada? None of those bands are similar in sound.

I guess that they both had a sort of "rustic" image, as well as a Bob Dylan connection, but musically, they seem very different to me.

  24. Journey & Foreigner is a very lazy comparison. They are not even remotely close. Journey and Giuffria would be a closer match, but not even that. Due to Steve Perry, Journey doesn't really sound like much save a weird hybrid of rock and Sam Cooke.

Not much like Foreigner due to Lou Gramm being such a distinctive voice, too.

  25. Not really.
