In the 90's every band either sounded like Dave Matthews or Soundgarden to me and I wasn't even old yet. Not my favorite era...

Early Pearl Jam and STP had a similar sound. Weren't STP accused of ripping off PJ? Anyhow - only really comparing STP early to PJ's first (rather mainstream sounding first LP).

I hear similarities between Chris Youlden and Peter Green. They both take me "to that place" if you know what I mean. So it's Savoy Brown with Chris on vocals and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac for me.

You are correct there are keys, but for TYA Chick Churchill was a full member of the group and only played keys. In SB it was not until Paul Raymond joined on Street Corner that a keyboardist was a full member of the group. Lonesome Dave was primarily a rhythm guitarist, another difference as TYA never had one. Most of their pre-SCT work was guitars only, or only minimal keys. Keys are much more central to the TYA sound and arrangements, but I concede I overstated their lack of presence on early SB. I also hear far more jazz influence in TYA, but that doesn't mean there's none in SB - that is I concede more a matter of opinion.

Still the main point remains that other than both being blues rock, what is there that is "really similar"? Any two songs that fit that description?

Both were guitar driven bands, with Simmonds and A Lee, respectively, the leaders of the groups. There is very little overlap in their styles. And vocally as I said there is really no overlap at all.

It frankly has never occurred to me before to see them as very similar.

Not really similarities between specific bands but early on I though Joe Walsh's songs were still Randy Mesiner in Eagles.

(I also thought John Sebastian and Michael McDonald were black.)

Well, I might hear more similarities between those two bands than between TYA and SB. Youlden's voice was deeper, lower, than Green's.

There's a few moments of similarities between The GoGos and The Bangles. Love 'em both but it's true. Not outright, but certainly at times.

When I was 12 I didn't know the difference between Earth, wind and fire and Kool and the gang.
I still have trouble with them.
