Not really in sound exactly but more of experimenting with a genre that often gets piled on as sounding the same. They both were for a time doing things you wouldn't see, though the first band definitely had it going from the first record. They both have two albums in the genre that are said as essential for this reason "Dazzle Ships" and "Tin Drum".

It's hard to reach that pinnacle, no doubt, but there are some modern artists that remind me a bit of Joni. The Weather Station (the project of Toronto’s Tamara Lindeman) is very good and immediately reminiscent of early Joni Mitchell, a great voice and songs. Just one of a few, but don't disagree with you, there's only one Joni Mitchell.

Both are American folk rock bands of the same era, (mid to late sixties). Which I really like.
Both songs below fit in the same category, what do you guys think. I might be off.

The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

Not sure that one counts, since they have the same band members.

I do love Joni...her music has never failed to make me stop and think, "Holy F***".

That goes for the first two albums.
Afterwards the Queen influence increases and they kinda get their own sound.

    They’re not a joke band.

I’m no huge fan and recognize they steal heavily from certain groups, but they have some good songs.

I don’t write off many bands unless they’re just flat horrible or don’t play music that moves me. STP has moments of near greatness.

Boh very quintessential 70's and Prog-lite, I give you that, but that's where it ends for me.
