    Nancy: "Excellent, baby!...What's a bez?"
Jez: "Oh, er, Bez in American...he's like...you know Flavor Flav from Public Enemy?"
    Nancy: "No."
Jez: "Well, he's like him. But with maracas."

I'd actually figure that Bez's job of dancing frantically for entire sets is fairly exhausting.

See also comments about Ramones, Motorhead, AC/DC, and the OP's Hawkwind.

Whatever you think of them musically, they are/were all intensely physical performers, and the chance that any of us could step in and do what they do for a full set is pretty small.

Playing the hi-hat that fast for the Ramones, Motorhead, or the likes of "Let There Be Rock", my right hand would fall off three songs into the set.

  6. I'm not disagreeing with you but I don't think The Beach Boys have gotten the credit they deserve as instrumentalists in part because some people think The Wrecking Crew did it all. Here's The Beach Boys all by themselves. Carl Wilson was 15 years old when he played lead guitar on "Miserlou".

Perhaps, but none of The Beach Boys have struck me as great instrumentalists. I’m sure they’re competent.

From my perspective, Dennis Wilson was only a serviceable drummer and Carl Wilson a decent guitarist. That’s kind of damning faint praise, but I think it’s accurate. I’m not bagging on them in the least, though. As I said what’s more important is songwriting and they have that over a ton of bands; certainly over KISS

All posts here that say "that music is easy" need to also state their experience in playing that music live or in the studio. Barring that, the opinions really are totally without any basis.

Someone actually mentioned Mike Anthony? Good grief....I can't imagine trying to toe the musical line between the Van Halen brothers!

It was just a joke, I have a deep respect for John Cage and I admire his ideas on music. It's a conceptually complex piece that any of us can perform. Simply great.

Wouldn't the correct answer be those EDM artists who pretend to adjust things on their laptops? They wave their arms occasionally and get back to their e-mail. They literally don't need to be there.

A comment from the younger brother of an old buddy of mine.
Back when Jim Jarmusch's Year Of The Horse came out, he could not understand Neil's comment in the movie about how Poncho 'brings his strength' to the band. The guy had this thing, "How hard can it be to be the rhythm player in Crazy Horse? I could do it!" And he was probably right. And he was only about 14 at the time.

How about Twisted Sister? Fairly straightforward (but great) riffs and songs.

And I have to bring up Mark Evans, formerly of AC/DC, particularly because "Live Wire" is the same note on bass over and over :D

I love the Horse. Saw them playing with NY and I was astonished. I play in bands since 1979, and I was amazed by how those guys almost never try to 'embellish' a tune with some sort of 'instrumental competence'. I guess it's very hard to do, very hard to resist. Neil's been very lucky to find them, the real garage band.
