In terms of knowing who they were and loving their music it would be
    John Lennon
    Bob Marley
    Joe Strummer
All of those were a real kick in the balls.
I would add Hendrix but he was gone before I knew who he was.
The day a friend played me his first album for the first time I asked so whats he doing now?

John Lennon by far. He was a genius musically and used his fame for good.
Jerry Garcia a little. Loved the music but his lifestyle and philosophy were not to be copied. A mess of a man.

Phil Ochs. No contest. I cried like it was my best friend. Lennon, Croce, Marley, Chapin, and my friend Pete Seeger, all have been major heartbreaks. There are others. There will be more.

Lou Reed. Usually I don't care about celebrities but Lou Reed's death hit me hard. I grew up with his music, I saw him live, such a loss.

    John Lennon.

I've never been so freaked out about someone dying, before or since.

I echo your sentiments regarding Clark. What a sad story... and a huge loss.

I guess I'm actually surprised to say Whitney Houston. I wasn't even really a fan, but so many of the others were in my younger days, while Whitney's death was at a point where I was more conscious of my own mortality. She was so incredibly talented, and yet was so completely ravaged by her own vices.

Stevie Ray Vaughan -I was fortunate to see him several times, he was, in fact, the first concert I ever went to. So, it seemed more personal, more real. Before, musicians were only folks I read about or caught on tv.

Alex Chilton -For various personal reasons and connections.

Bobby "Blue" Bland - One of my all time faves. Kinda pissed me off that his passing didn't receive more coverage. I wasn't shocked, but it still really irked me.

    D.Boon - Just sad.

Didn't they announce the death of John Lennon during Monday Night Football and there was this eerie silence during the game?

It must have been about 4 in the afternoon here. There was a news flash he'd been shot then another one he'd died. I remember it like it was yesterday.

    lennon.
my wife and i were over at my parents house and we had just sat down for tea.[dinner.]
the tv was on when suddenly a 'news flash' comes on saying john lennon had been shot!
then the announcer received some up to date info and said he had died!

i didn't say a word, i just got up and went to sit in my car. crying my eyes out.

freddie's death would be the next death that affected me.
we were driving along the motorway when all of a sudden news came over the radio that freddie mercury was dead!
i had to pull over to the side of the motorway as that upset me too. queen were my favourite group.

I just saw the clip on YouTube, it was during the Pats v Dolphins game when Howard Cosell announced that Lennon had been shot.

I'd replace "knowledge" with "belief". He didn't know any more than anyone else.

Kurt Cobain, probably because I was a big Nirvana fan and was using their music to help me through a rough patch (including watching the MTV Unplugged concert a lot on MTV).
