I find myself hanging on to awful-sounding remasters because they're the only way I can a couple of desirable bonus tracks. Increasingly, however, I am finding myself say, "Screw it" and just selling them.

I'll spend the extra dough on old promo/cd singles/ if applicable. Or like what I did with a bunch of New Order- do needledrops of the 7/12 incher's.
The Level 42 deluxe cd World Machine was so terrible I sourced what I could from the old CD-V's
Because 'Awful Remasters' is subjective I won't go into any more detail on other bands.
Thing is with my favorites, I've been collecting for a very long time so I usually already have most of what's being released, so it needs to have something really unique for me to bite.

OKNOTOK - well it's not awful. It just isn't as good as the original Parlopone release.

Awful goes way over the top. But the Bowie Ryko reissues are essential for the many many bonus tracks.

I keep the awful-sounding Pete Townshend White City remaster around just for "Save It For Later" and "Night School"

    The much-maligned 2005 EMI Donovan re-issues.

The Mellow Yellow album is from a better mono source on the 2005 than other re-issues I have but the rest are plagued with dodgy sources, bad edits or altered mixes as well as some questionable mastering choices. The artwork and liner notes are excellent throughout, however.

Despite some mastering issues of their own, the bonus tracks are incredible.

    Sunshine Superman:

    "Breezes of Patchulie" [outtake]
    "Museum" [first version]
    "Superlungs" [first version]
"The Land of Doesn't Have To Be" [outtake]
    "Sunshine Superman" [1969 stereo mix]
    "Good Trip" ["Good Time" demo]
    "House Of Jansch" [demo]

    Mellow Yellow:

"Epistle To Dippy" [US single A-side]
    "Preachin' Love" [US single B-side]
    "Good Time" [outtake]
"There Is A Mountain" [US single A-side]
    "Superlungs" [second version]
    "Epistle to Dippy" [alternative arr.]
    "Sidewalk" ["The Observation" demo]
    "Writer In The Sun" [demo]
    "Hampstead Incident" [demo]
    "Museum" [demo]

    the hurdy gurdy man
    :

    "Teen Angel" [UK single B-side]
    "Poor Cow" [US single B-side]
    "Lalena" [US single A-side]
"Aye My Love" [US single B-side]
"What A Beautiful Creature You Are" [outtake]
    "Colours" [1969 re-make]
    "Catch The Wind" [1969 re-make]

    Barabajagal:

    "Stromberg Twins" [outtake]
    "Snakeskin" [outtake]
    "Lauretta's Cousin Laurinda" [outtake]
"The Swan (Lord Of The Reedy River)" [outtake]
"A Poor Man's Sunshine (Nativity)" [outtake]
"New Year's Resolution (Donovan's Celtic Jam)" [outtake]
    "Runaway" [demo]
    "Sweet Beverley" [demo]
    "Marjorie (Margarine)" [demo]
    "Little White Flower" [demo]
    "Good Morning Mr Wind" [demo]
    "Palais Girl" [demo]
    "Lord Of The Universe" [demo]

[note: the single sides aren't all original single versions]

  9. The 2004 remaster of 90125 by Yes isn't exactly awful, but I find there are better CD editions out there. However, it's essential for the three additional songs from the Cinema sessions, plus the extended Owner Of A Lonely Heart remix that is effectively the very first "Art Of Noise" track.

Those Judas Priest remasters may be horrible, but some of the bonus tracks are pretty good. Thunder Road, Fire Burns Below, and Living Bad Dreams are definitely worth a listen. What's funny is that unlike the regular albums, none of the bonus tracks had noise reduction or weird filtering applied except for Race with the Devil on Sin After Sin.

If you want all the tracks from the UK/US on one disc with related B-sides you have to suffer poor mastering/dynamic range compression. It is possible to get all tracks without compression, and better mastering. But you need to buy 3 discs instead of 1.

The 2005 remasters of the Van Der Graaf Generator albums were all jacked up and sound lousy for the main records but the bonuses on "H to He" and "Pawn Hearts" deserve to be heard. You can always record your vinyl copies to CD to play in the car.

You can always play the non-remastered copies in the car right? No need to record them, especially when you may not own them.

The Japanese SHM escaped the horrid boosting and include the bonuses.

I'm not sure I'd call The Replacements remasters AWFUL, but the bonus tracks convinced me to ditch my originals.

Lots in the Who catalog. A Quick One, both the original 1995 mono remaster, then the secret stereo remaster come to mind.
Although not as bad, the Sell Out Deluxe. Tommy Deluxe, Odds and Sods remaster, it goes on and on...

The non-remastered CDs were horrible, too. Sounded like third generation tapes played from underneath a pile of manure. If you don't own LPs for this material I don't think you have heard it. They aren't that hard to find.

Unless you are right about the SHMs, which I always assumed had the same mastering as the 2005s since they had the same bonuses.
