Now, I am not talking about constantly changing chameleons such as Bowie or Prince. I am talking about an act that became established in one style, then recreated their sound and/or image to something much different but remained just as successful, possibly more so, than before.

The one that comes to mind for me is The Bee Gees. They transformed from a somber baroque pop act to one of the icons of disco. Jive Talkin' vs. New York Mining Disaster? If that is not a complete 360, I don't know what is. Quite a change in sound and spirit, and the songs were crafted just as well, probably more so, than the old tear-jerkers.

    Who can think of others?

Pantera. Used to be a poppy metal band. Then went more hardcore with the crazy riffs and sold way more records.

Alanis Morissette, started out as dance pop, but became successful as an angst-y alt-rocker.

See the first sentence about musical chameleons. Would you not consider Dylan to be in that category?

The band that played short psych/punk songs like "F**k Rock'n'Roll" and "Double Exposure" with Richard Hell was a wholly different thing from the band that recorded Marquee Moon and was quite fond of stretching out on songs. They would have succeeded (artistically) either way, but post Hell they were something else indeed. Although they always got around to playing "Psychotic Reaction".

Yeah, I remember they originally had the classic hair-metal look and sound, but they were able to leave that behind and thrive in the Grunge era.

Back on topic: suppose we can add Bjork to the list too.

One issue I had not considered is all of those 70s rock bands like Heart, Genesis, Chicago and others who became successful in the 80s as light-rock and/or adult contemporary acts.
