Last I listened to fully was Chicago VII.

Haven't cared for the cuts I've heard after that. And don't even care to delve into VIII - whatever to see if anything might be of interest. They just got too smaltzy for me.

RIP Terry Kath. With that is my answer and a tribute to a great talent! Loved that man's playing and singing.

    II

It's not that I bought everything by them at stopped at this. It's the only one I ever bought, because I liked Make Me Smile and 25 or 6 to 4. I never heard anything after that made me want buy anything by them.

    II.

I've heard III and think it's okay so I might get that someday.

    That's about it.

In Seraphine's book he mentioned that when they met David Foster, they played an entire album's worth of songs (that they believed would make up the 16th album) and he said they needed to get rid of all of them and start over. I'm curious whether that batch of songs would have been better.

    XI.

Everything backwards from that period is sublime.

XI, and not because it was Kath's last.

It was just the last solid one they cranked out.

You owe it to yourself to get a copy of Chicago Transit Authority to find out what started it all. CTA is easily one of the best double albums of all times, in my top five for sure.

I pretty much have the studio albums up to XXX and the Box. Although I spend more time listening to CTA and II now a days.

You don't think the 2 were related? I sure do, although you could really hear the change of direction starting with VII. Cetera was doing most of the vocals on those "adult contemporary" ballads after XI, which is where I jump off the boat. They never recovered that Kath contrast with the vocals and he was under utilized after VI.

CTA is a fabulous, fabulous album. 45 years and I still love it! They never came close again. To me, that was lightning in a bottle.

I have through to VII, although only the first three were bought at the time of release. I've always preferred III to II and of the others, I much prefer the sprawling IV.

But on XI Kath has more lead vocals than anyone else.

I bought II, thinking it was a mistake since CTA is so great. Then I bought III. That was my mistake.

  20. Chicago transit authority is a great album. A few of their other early hits are pretty good too but once Roman numerals started, I disliked most of their music.

The self-indulgence and pseudo-intellectualism on their first few albums was pretty hard to take, but they hit a sweet spot of sorts between V and VIII -- well-crafted and -executed pop-rock, but nothing like the tripe they would stoop to in the '80s. So X and XI were the tipping point for me.

I have CTA, II, III, V and VII, but really haven't played them much lately. Back when it was released, I listened to V constantly.

The quality drops off dramatically after VII for me, but I've got everything through XI, the last Kath album. I had Hot Streets and 13 on vinyl years ago, but they're long gone.

CTA, II, III, and V are gold for me, and I think VI and VII are pretty solid. CTA is probably one of my ten favorite albums ever.
