Reminds me of that TV Funhouse episode where the kids tell Mickey, "You're supposed to be funny?"

In all fairness, they came from two animation studios with very different priorities (and budgets, which necessitated different approaches).

Bugs/Warner Brothers every time... I really, really like some of the other feature length Disney stuff technically and from a storytelling standpoint (Dumbo, Snow White, etc.) but the Bugs stuff is just more my style of comedy. Rabbit season! Duck season! It's fiddler crab season.

I think the Bugs bunny shows are funnier than Mickey's but I think Mickey is a much more likable guy.

Who would I rather have living next door to me? Mickey, of course. Bugs would ruin the back yard! But seriously, is this really a question? Mickey's like Jack Benny, the one who holds it together while the supporting cast runs wild, while all Bugs needs is someone (hewwo?) to torment.

Plus the Bugs & Elmer 8 Mile rap-off from Robot Chicken is priceless. With Porky as the DJ-his last line is awesome.

Disney shorts were art, but Looney Tunes were funnier.

Though the Donald Duck shorts could be fairly funny, Mickey was more "cute" than amusing...

I'm voting Mickey ('cause my wife loves him).
She got a pic with him when we went to Disney World for our honeymoon.
    Gotta dig that out.

Well, Mickey was the most popular cartoon character in the world at one point - and he's still probably the most famous.

IIRC, didn't theaters advertise MM cartoons more than main attractions at times?

Looking back, it's hard to figure out what audiences thought was so funny about MM in the 30s - maybe he just gave audiences a boost during the Depression - but it can't be denied that his cartoons were once much beloved...

Remember that Mickey Mouse was one of the first cartoon characters with a real personality. Up to that point cartoon characters had been very simple. Mickey was adventurous, charming, and someone the audience could root for when he got into a jam.

Sure, but I'm still not sure all that explains his insane popularity. Even when Disney and other studios introduced other - more interesting - characters, MM remained the Big Kahuna.

The MM shorts have their charms - honestly, they're more amusing than most give them credit for being. The comedy usually comes from the antics/characters around MM and not the Mouse himself, but they're mostly quite entertaining...

The character was charming and cute and likable. That's really it. Eventually audiences grew tired of him and moved on to other characters.

Leaving aside the recent Marvel and Star Wars acquisitions, Winnie the Pooh is actually the most popular character in the Disney stable including merchandise.

Bugs Bunny is the bastard anarchist child of Noir lighting, addiction to surrealism and all those weird substances floating around Termite Terrace.
Mickey Mouse gives guided tours of Peenemünde, hand in glove with Dr. Wernher von Braun.
Mickey's the Sorcerer's Apprentice. Bugs is the Magician.
Mickey will send you on your merry way. Bugs will mess with you.

I never got on with Disney toons even when I was really young. If there was nothing else on TV I still would not watch Donald Duck or whatever. Not sure why they never appealed to me.

My little 10 month old nephew adores The Micky Mouse Club House. We tape all the episodes and have all the songs running in our head all day long. The smile that comes across that little boys face when he sees and hears Micky's voice is to die for. Once you hear The Hotdog Song it will be in your head forever.

I grew up watching Bugs but now Micky rules the day for me.

    I vote Mickey.

I personally don't get the whole Disney draw but that's me. Bugs without question.

Also that Hot Dog tune is by They Might Be Giants... though I suspect you all knew that already.
