As most of us Pink Floyd fans know, there were 2.0 and 5.1 mixes of Meddle which received an unintended release with the large Early Years box set.

Much has been said on this forum about the 5.1 mix but very little about the stereo mix .
So I was wondering, which mix do you guys/gals prefer: the original 71 mix or the 2016 Early Years remix?

Don't make me seek out different mixes now, I have an original Japanese pressing on vinyl and it's outstanding. That'll do me.

I'll add that music isn't supposed to be heard in 5.1

It's hidden in the bluray of the 1971 volume Reverber/ation, but only in the box set. The individual release later omitted the whole Meddle remix content.

I'll say the original can't be beat — although with better mastering the remix coulda come damn close to it

I like the song echoes a lot on the hidden Blu Ray mix. I immediately felt the original was better for side 1 though. I noticed how much different and clear echoes sounded, you can hear the speaker moving so clearly.

I didn't know about a 5.1 mix. I have an original 1st US press on wax and it's almost the only mastering I've heard.

What are the differences? Does it have that obnoxious crowd roaring in "Fearless?"

It sticks pretty close to the original, so yes, the crowd is there

It's the Quad mix of "Echoes" from the private press launch event in 1971 (included in all physical copies of Reverber/ation) that has massive differences from the stereo

The latest mix is really good, but I still prefer the original.
    The surround mix is great.

Now now, no need to insult the Kop Choir.

    Indeed..

Would the new 2.0 mix be a fold down of the 5.1 or a mix done independently?
There is very little information online relating to the new mix.

I've only heard the Canadian version of the LP & CD, so I voted original

The original mix was very well done, so little to no improvement could be made. Nevertheless, the 5.1 mix of "Echoes" is quite enjoyable
There are some parts with extreme clarity.

The stereo remix is overprocessed and sounds too much like a modern Pro Tools recording, it doesn't suit the generally ethereal music. Drains out a lot of the atmosphere. Doesn't touch the original imo, and I like most of Wilson's remixes for example.
5.1 is quite nice to have though, but it's not the best I've ever heard or anything.

So, let me get this straight. Total so far there are four mixes.

    Original
    Quad
    2016 Stereo
    2016 5.1

    Yes?

Only "Echoes" was mixed in quad, if I recall correctly.

A friend recently got the 5.1 mix off the blu-ray for me and I like it (have only had one proper listen so far). I didn’t know there was a new 2016 stereo mix too, d’oh! I have to say that the newest Pink Floyd Records vinyl of Meddle just seems perfect to me. One of the best records to put on when demonstrating the benefits of vinyl to a naysayer.

It was hidden in the box-set (by mistake, I think), and it's not included in the separate volumes or digital downloads.

I’m pretty sure the new stereo mix is just the 5.1 folded down. The lack of dynamics in the second half of ‘One Of These Days’ is the clearest indicator.
