The 1984 discs were the first ones I had. Until I picked up the original vinyl, which was about a decade later, these were the "official" versions for me. I remember reading the liner notes but I must have forgotten the part where it said they were overdubbed, I recall at the time thinking that they (the bass especially) sounded so modern! I particularly loved those long dramatic bass notes during the grand piano intro to Absolutely Free. Some people are against overdubbing of classic works but I can really enjoy what was done with Money, especially given the fact that (I assume anyways) Zappa must have been the one who approved the overdubs. Today I enjoy both versions equally but I find the 1984 disc is still my "go-to" for the "official" version.

I too love those notes - they really fatten up the sound during those moments.

I didn't notice it until it was pointed out years later, I think it was on the Wikipedia page where I first read it. Now it sticks out every time I hear it....

Anyone who owns the 2012 UMe and the ‘96 Ryko ever compare the two soundwise?

Currently listening to the 1987 remix of "Son Of Mr. Green Genes" on YouTube and reloading Lumpy Money to my computer, since my old computer broke. :realmad:

I don't feel like starting a new thread for this - is the 2012 Zappa Records CD of Lumpy Gravy (ZR 3836) the original 1968 mix? The CD lists the source as the 1993 digital master but I think I remember reading somewhere that it is indeed the original mix. Can someone confirm?
