Nice to see her mentioned, here's another one....

It's tragic she didn't get a chance to be on a Norman Connors album..

White soul I think Elvis and Bobby Darin first. Took the "black" essence (I mean that in a good way!) and BAM - you have to see them to know they were white (well, Darin played The Apollo often, so they could SEE him before he hit it big) :)

Megafan of so many artists, I just would never put Macca in this category... powerful vocals like on "Helter Skelter" doesn't add up to soul IMO, I mean - I think the Valentine's Day album vocals are closest (maybe). And neither does a "Yer Blues" - throaty blues, but not soul. So many people I think were way better at "white soul" if we think of rock/pop.

Elton John above any of The Beatles IMO. His voice has white soul. But it's still a stretch IMO. "Border Song" - yeah, Elton's got some white soul.

Paul was really good in his prime, I was really knocked out with the stuff on Between Two Fires.

Great sixties mod band ..........did a lot of U.S. R'n'B / soul covers , Had a great lead singer in Reg King .
Later,Reg left the band for a solo career and his brother Alan took the lead and led the band into a new avenue as Mighty Baby

Stansfield is really under-appreciated, especially in the US.

No doubt he's at the top. That's why they call him the "Soul Provider."

Bennie & The Jets (peaked #15 on the Soul charts) and Philadelphia Freedom hit #32 .... leading to an appearing on Soul Train. Also, the Thom Bell Sessions is naturally soulful in the classic Spinners style.

    Diamond Dog Cautionary Example

If the mark of a great soul singer is that he makes your toes curl and makes you do the B.B.King "What's that smell ? " look when he hits that note, then I'm throwing Warren Haynes' hat into this ring. Without hesitation. Guy sings like that AND plays guitar like that... makes me sick... :uhhuh:

Not sure how you would categorise Lyle - I reckon "Joshua Judges Ruth", for one, certainly has soul elements (by my definition anyway).
Great debate to be had either way.
