Not sure who the all time greatest is, but I'd say the most underrated of all time is Jamie Lidell.

If "soul singer" can include someone who's soul comes through his vocal, without trying to be a soul singer ..

Willie Nelson certainly qualifies as does Gene Clark.
They both sound like they have lived the songs they sing.

I'm not sure if I have read through all of the posts, so....has anyone mentioned
Richard Manuel? I did see Eddie Hinton mentioned. Have you heard his
4th or 5th album Hard Luck Guy? Good grief! That could be Otis Redding
coming out of the speakers. I also second the earlier listing of Dan Penn, Felix Cavaliere,
Gregg Allman, Van the Man, and Tony Joe White.

After reading this thread, I will have to dig out a cd set I compiled (8 discs, I think?)
White Boys (and Girls) Sing the (Rhythm &) Blues.

I was scanning this thread with an eye to see if either of these 2 greats had been mentioned; and lo and behold... both in a single post.

I was lucky enough to have seen Tony Joe some months back in the very intimate; maybe 150 - 200 seat venue, Joe's Pub in NYC. Tony Joe aided by simply an old beat on Fender Strat that he made growl like a mountain lion, slither like water moccasin and whine like an old hound dog. A well worn warmed up tubed Fender Tweed, a neck braced harmonica and a drummer. The show... was miraculous. Transporting. Deep. I never got to see Eddie Hinton.

Most others that had crossed my mind have been mentioned. Except for... I hadn't seen him mentioned as far as I'd gotten... Willy DeVille. A solid urban soul singer as good as they came. Early on in Willy's career the legendary Doc Pomus, who would later work on an entire album with Willy, said he one of the greatest working singers of the day. ...And Doc knew his stuff in that... and most other regards. The man knew how the write a good song and who could sing it from the inside out. From the heart.

Opps; just saw Willy mentioned just a few clicks up. Oh well; you can't talk-up either Willy or Doc for that matter too much. Giants both. Both too little known by the uninformed.

Her style is a little overblown for my tastes but hands down, Teena Marie was the white singer most successful at “crossing over” into the world of Soul Music.

Someone mentioned Elvis Presley. In 1969 he really did some fantastic "soul work". Here´s a soul cover of Jerry Butler´s hit "Only the strong survive"
