According to most people here, every singer who ever recorded a soul song is a soul singer. Here are some examples if white folks who actually influenced the genre, created classics and stayed (mostly) true to the soul sound.

    Linda Lyndell
(You can hear her black gospel education)
    Skip Easterling
(Had a R&B hit with Hoochi Coochi Man)
    The Magnificent Men
(The only white group to ever be a main act at the apollo)

That tremolo and slide acoustic guitar is killer, puts the hip in hypnotic. Russell is just a flat out great singer.

I second Randall Bramblett. Also, I would mention Ernie Cate of The Cate Bros.

“Her voice wasn't black and it wasn't white," says Darlene Love, whom Springfield greatly admired. "It was totally unique. You knew it was Dusty when she came on the radio”

Check out this Hamish Stuart performance singing live with Dave Sanborn singing Love and Happiness. Its permanently embedded in my mind
as one of the best "get down" efforts ever. The song kicks off the concert but the entire show is great

I don't know if Hamish is the greatest, however I agree he has a great voice. He did a nice version of "Ain't No Sunshine" on the McCarney Unplugged album/video. I found it here; the performance starts at 1:20:50 in. I forgot that Paul actually plays drums on this tune! Edit: Since this is the unedited footage, the song is actually performed twice, back to back!

Not who I'd by any means consider a traditional Soul Singer... but a guy who sings with as much soul as anybody... anybody; Jack Bruce.

Yes; agreed 2 of the very best. I've had the pleasure, the privilege of seeing Tony Joe and number of times; the last only a week before he suffered a fatal heart attack. He played an excellent, intimate soulful show. He was in excellent voice and appeared vital and in fine health. After the show we talked a while and he told me he was looking forward to going home and fishing a new place he'd been told about. R.I.P.

I love Willy and have since the beginning of his career... however; I don't think I'd consider him a soul singer although he without question always sings with a boatload of soul.
