  3. Certainly don't think she's the "All Time Greatest"; just think she belongs on a 21st Century Blue Eyed Soul Singers list:

    "Duffy - Mercy"

About half the singers checked in this thread are soul singers in Bizarro World.

Lots of great ones -- Joe Cocker, Van Morrison, Gregg Allman, Joan Osborne (and at least one ridiculous one: Boy George) listed, but I'd have to go with Eric Burdon.

The best White soul singer is Daryl Hall.
The second one is John Fogerty
Then we have late Terry Kath, Mike McDonald, late, Gregg Allman, late Ronnie Hammond of ARS...

    Ridiculous bad.

In comparison to Eric Burdon, Joe Cocker, Van Morrison, Gregg Allman, Joan Osborne, Tom Jones, etc... Boy George?! :wtf:

I also think Boz Scaggs is a stretch (especially when he became popular, as an MOR Pop Crooner), when compared to those I've listed above (and a lot of others listed by other posters here).

Paul McCartney's “Don’t Let Me Down” :wtf:

I don't know where to begin, except that I don't think he sings a note on that John Lennon song.

In no way possible am I a fan of Culture Club or Boy George as a solo artist. I have heard very little of his stuff but I have heard enough to know that he has a seriously good voice.
Out of your list I would rate him above Tom Jones & Boz Scaggs. Joan Osborne is someone I've never heard.

Ronnie Hammond of ARS in an interesting addition I could live with.

    Bob Seger

  22. I'm not sure I can define soul, but I know it when I hear it. The example I usually cite is John Lennon had soul, Julian Lennon didn't.

I'll also second Joan Osborne, for this if nothing else:

Boy George is responsible for some of the best soul songs since the early 70s, Time, Mistake #3, Black Money.

Paul contributes a nice harmony vocal. But it is John's song, as you say. As Paul relates: "We recorded it in the basement of Apple for Let It Be and later did it up on the roof for the film. We went through it quite a lot for this one. I sang harmony on it, which makes me wonder if I helped with a couple of words, but I don't think so. It was John's song."
