Serge Gainsbourg is my ultimate number one contemporary songwriter. Effortlessly clever, funny and deep - and often at once.

Can't decide between John Lennon and Paul McCartney, nor can I between Freddie Mercury and Brian May.

Also; Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Brian Eno, David Byrne, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Philip Glass if he counts. There's loads, really.

    But Gainsbourg first!
