I think it was joke, as in a forum moderator can close the thread now as the best band has been chosen

lots of very talented bands and members of bands.
The guys in Union Station are all excellent musicians ... Jerry Douglas is brilliant.

The guys in Queen were all excellent musicians.

Whether you like the music or not isn't really relevant, but the guys in the Magic Band (beefheart) were very good musicians, and obviously extremely patient.

Zappa always had a bunch of brilliant musicians. the '74 band and the '82 bands were quite amazing really

I was debating in my head between them and John Coltrane's great quartet - John Coltrane, McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, and Elvin Jones. They played so well together.

Tough choice for me, but I think Miles' group edges it b/c of Tony Williams and Wayne Shorter.

    Many fine answers. I'll add:

    Traveling Wilburys
    Little Village

Also, the Anderson/Squire/Howe/Wakeman/Bruford incarnation of YES.

Have to agree with those who mentioned Rush. Geddy and Neil are icons for their respective instruments, but Alex should be too. Just "La Villa Strangiato" alone puts Alex in the upper echelon of guitarists. Rush is my answer.

    The Who, of course.
Entwistle - bassist of the millenium. Miles ahead of all the rest.
Moon - best rock drummer ever, period.
Daltrey - best rock front man with the ability to belt them out or do gentle ballads with ease.
Townshend - best rhythm guitarist ever and one helluva lead guitarist.

IMHO it could only be The John Coltrane Quintet with Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman, Elvin Jones

but many might say The John Coltrane Quartet with Tyner, Jimmy Garrison, Jones and I woundn't necessarily disagree.

And, obviously Coltrane thought the latter was what he was looking for.

  24. It's funny, up through and ending with Hemispheres Lifeson was seen as a guitar hero, and after their 80s transition not so much, whereas the other two seemed to have maintained if not grown their hero status.

Yes and The Magic Band are great shouts. I've seen The Magic Band twice and met Drumbo and they were astonishing. They'd have to be!
