Who here doesn't think that "Blood On The Tracks" is the best Bob Dylan release?

I have always thought the consensus was that Blonde On Blonde was considered his best. But that may be because of Dylan's well-known quote sort of acknowledging that he thought it was his best.

"The closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind was on individual bands in the Blonde On Blonde album. It's that thin, that wild mercury sound. It's metallic and bright gold, with whatever that conjures up."

The only albums I would rank above Blood on the Tracks are Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde and Freewheelin.'

But BOTT is the benchmark for all Dylan albums that followed it. ("____ is the best Dylan album...since Blood on the Tracks")

    'Desire' for me.

'Idiot Wind' does my head in.

He said that back in 1978, I believe. At the time and for a while after, Blonde might have still loomed higher than Blood in a lot of people's estimation. Blonde is certainly in the shifting top tier of 3-5, in any case, but as I said, consensus is not a stable thing beyond that.

I love 'Blood On The Tracks', but Dylan's three LP output in 1965-1966 can't be topped.

Great album but Blonde on Blonde is still my favorite.

  9. I think it is his Best 70's album. 'Blonde On Blonde' (what does this title mean?) is his defining moment IMO.

Blood on the Tracks is excellent, and is his best 70s album, but for me Dylan was at his absolute peak on Highway.

I don't care for BOTT that much but Time Out of Mind is the first record that spoke to my life. I've always like Dylan, esp. Blonde on Blonde, but this album is the first time I recognized Dylan's particular genius.

I'd rate Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde ahead of Blood on the Tracks

Blonde On Blonde, Highway 61, Bringing It All Back Home and
John Wesley Harding are all better in my opinion.
That doesn't mean it is not a great album.

Over the years, these swap back and to- but right now... (and #1 has been there for something like 10 years now!)

    1- John Wesley Harding
2/3- Love and Theft (OR) Highway 61
    4- Blonde On Blonde
5- Bringing It All Back Home
    6- Blood On The Tracks

If it's not my favorite, it's awfully close. Highway 61 rates right up there too. But BOTT is most definitely Dylan's last great album. And its consistent from first song to last - which is what makes it one of his absolute best - to me.

    Simon A Arrr!

There many threads about this album, but mostly about the sound quality of its different releases.

I'm listening to this album for the very first time. I've never looked beyond Blonde On Blonde so I'm quite impressed with what I'm hearing. I'm playing the 2003 Columbia SACD an acquaintance lent me. I'll be getting the MFSL SACD shortly.

If You See Her, Say Hello is quite a lovely song.

Until this album I had only listened to Dylan on the radio and had the Greatest Hits LP. After this album I was motivated to go back into his catalog and go forward for 40 years. This will always be my favorite as it is the reason Dylan became a favorite.
